Richard Andrews 0
Took it to a local Leeds based VW specialist who had it on ramp and checked over everything (apparently) said it was the gear box mount and driver side tie rod that were both shot (car only has 70k miles on it though).Parts were cheap so I bought and replaced both...still knocking bad...Basically knocking when braking hard or accelerating hard...When its raining its not as loud...PLEASE HELP THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS! Richard Andrews 0
Do you think a main dealer would diagnose the problem without actually charging me for the work, cause the so called VW specialist I have been to doesn’t seem to know shit. After driving the car I was told it was defo the gear box mount. I changed this, it was only £20 and easy to fit so no drama, but it is still knocking. Took it back and he said change the other mounts…not really a diagnostic…Trying to figure whats wrong with no ramp and no jacks at present and with the car lowered it is a pain especially with so little time on my hands at the moment. I just want someone to tell me what is causing it rather than me slowely replacing all the component on the car in a hope..!Are there two rear engine mounts (L & R), one front mount and one gear box mount? VR6Pete 1,455
open your bonnet, start the car, stick your hand brake on, stick it in gear and slowly let your foot off the clutch and look for engine movement, sounds very much like engine mounts to me
vr6binks 0
ive got the same problem mate !! everytime i plant my foot down it will make a loud knock, i thought it was cos i put on a solid front engine mount but then i realised that my gearbox mount was shagged so i replaced it but i still got the knock so im gonna change the other rear mount next week and hopefully that will sort it ! richievr 1
also check the wishbone inner bushes
spindat45 0
Are there two rear engine mounts (L & R)' date=' one front mount and one gear box mount ????? [/quote']There is only one rear engine mount. It's at the back of the engine on the nearside below the master cylinder. If the knocking feels or sounds like it's coming from the drivers side it could be this one. It's usually got a heat proof plate covering it. As Richie suggested, it could also be wishbone bushes. The inner ones can't be seen easily as they are located between the chasis. One other possibility could be shock absorber top mounts. Kevin
Richard Andrews 0
All standard bushes have been replaced with powerflex, new coilovers and gear box mount replaced with standard. I think it is just a case of any flex now being transferred from the new ultra-stiff areas to the not so stiff (standard) areas, ie the front engine mount and rear engine mount, both which are standard and 70k miles old...Think Iam gonna replace with the vibra-technics ones. Rear is £78 front is £125! Lets hope the standard gear box mount lasts. I assume VR call this the 'Powertrain Mount'?
spindat45 0
I think the gearbox mount is referred to as the powertrain one.I went for the stiffer VF front mount with standard gearbox and rear mounts on my charged VR. I've heard good thing about fitting Vibra tech mounts all round as they aren't as harsh as the VF but the combination I went for is perfect for me. The front mount is the one that takes the most stress as the engine lifts when you put your fut down so definately uprate that one. Even at 70k miles, it will have been put under a lot of stress along with the rear one.
