hi ya guyyyyys!!

ive got a mate who has completely fallen in love with my gorgeous VR and now wants one of his own as i went from havin the slowest car of the group to the fastest!! woop woop!!

But he wants to go one better and get one to then stick a turbo on it, so i was wondering on top of buying the car as standard how much would he be looking at to get it all done?

he would want to do it properly with decent stuff, not cheap s**t but not top of the range $$$$$.

So can you help me out with a rough guide??? Cheers ppl!! :) :) :)

so parts can be sourced for a grand , but the few p laces that will do it will charge about 3k labour im guising? theyd have to give some sort or waranty.

diy guide: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?139931.post

have seen a vr6 turbo go for 5k or less on here...

The two things that cost the most are 1) reliability and 2) power goals.

1) You CAN build a reliable, daily use VR6T but you really must use the best quality plumbing fittings, hoses and components. Always build over kill and you'll have few problems.

2) Power costs money! If you want up to 400hp, then it can be done with an array of reasonably priced turbos. The standard engine with C2 Motorsports chip, a spacer, clutch and a better fuel pump will handle that quite nicely. So long as you're not brutal with it all the time, the transmission should last.

If you want 500hp or more, then you're going to need forged pistons, rods, stronger gearbox, stronger driveshafts and CV joints, huge brakes, beefy fuel pumps, big injectors, top quality mapping, etc etc. The list goes on.

In my experience, it's always the silly things that let you down. Simple things like turbo water coolant lines, silicon vac lines blowing off, bad wiring etc etc.

It's the shoddy installs that give VRTs a bad name but they can be very reliable :-)

Too many parts to list, but he first needs to decide on power goals and how he wants to use the car, and how often.

well mines been in a year now!! but what kev says is sound advice, even though i did mine myself, the silicon pipes are all 5 ply, for strength , and they are still fine. ive had very few problems, only a dodgy fuel pump, and a rrfpr that failed.. its now on a c2 ecu and some delphi 440's and its superb, its completed 3-4 sprint days and the same in track days including a 1000 mle round trip to germany.

including my ecu and injectors mine now stands me at around 1500 quid. and was pushing 370 bhp , before the new injectors.

3-5 grand should see a nice install by someone professional depending on what power goals he wants.

good luck

Bloody hell Jim boy you did do that on a tight budget!!! 1500??!!

Thanks for the advice.... i personally think he would be happy with something towards the 400bhp mark that is reliable and could be used as his daily if he wanted to.

He has got a daily runner, but i reckon the second he sits in a vr, then a turbo vr he will never wanna get out of it!!

So thats the main thing really, getting a reliable 400 ish bhp and doing it using the right stuff and not bodging it.

oh and jim dont forget me and my coillies will ya?! They're doin my head in sat in my garage just teasing me!!! :)

ill give him a spin in mine if he wants..

and yeah done on a budget of sorts, it was money i made from block paving drives over the summer .. so it cost me nothing in effect.

myself and kev have taken very different routes, both proving reliable.. i over spec 'd mine for what i wanted, although i imagine, my standard clutch won tlast much longer.

i havent forgot about your collies, but ive had a trapped nerve in me back, so at the mo, its still very painfull to bend , etc..

we will sort them soon :)

Ahhhh nooo... sorry to hear that mate!! Get yourself a quick 'session' with a physio, they can sort that out for ya nice and quick.... I suppose i can let you off for a lil while. ;) ;) ;)

And i know he'd be up for a spin in yours and i DEF would if you dont mind?! Be interesting to feel the difference. :) :) :)

Even professionals Use GAFFA TAPE

That is so true!!! i mechaniced for a supersport race team last year, workin on an R6 and we literally wouldnt get through a race weekend without gaffer tape & WD40.... the answer to any issue!!! :)

hmmmm... yeah im a bit worried about that. I do love my vr but i like the idea of having something 'savage' i just wish i had the budet to do it.....

Maybe in a year or two i might consider an upgrade.... Plus if my mate is gonna get a vr then i wanna make sure mine is quicker!! (not that we're a competitive bunch) lol :) :)

And Craggsy.. you know that we wouldnt consider anythin but gold paving down here... we dont cut corners like you 'northerners' ;)

Bloody ell, has it been a year already Jim? You've done really well!

I've had my fair share of problems but hopefully it's going to behave this time round....i.e. no cracking manifolds!! Been turboed for nearly 2.5 years now and the only thing that's caused me to call the AA out was split turbo coolant lines.

Glad to hear the C2 + Delphi combo is working out for you mate.

yep kev , a year about now, give or take a week.

touch wood, most of my 2-3 things have been failures from old age.. so nothing that i did'nt expect.

delphis and c2 works great for me.. its like the difference between , begi - c2 with redtops, and the the same again.. its becoming quite a handfull.. i can see a ltd slip diff and gearbox heading my way.

we will have to get together with ben and tony .. share horror stories , over a few beers. :)

That's good news as I've heard quite a few people in America had problems with the Delphis on their C2 42lb software, but I think the later yank ECUs must be specifically tailored for the Bosch injectors.

I tried the Delphis on my OBD2 (with and without C2 code) and it didn't bat an eye lid.

Anyway, you hit another nail on the head..... adding loads of grunt to an old car.... old existing parts tend to give up a little sooner than you'd like, LOL!

Get together sounds good :-)

Ok so my mate basicaly said he'd be happy to get around 300bhp out of a turbo for now and look to maybe upgrade it in the future as he doesnt think he would have to uprate so much of the other bits....

Im not sure how true this is guys so can you please help me out. If he is looking at bolting on a turbo to get around the 280 - 300bhp mark then how much would he be looking at to do that and how much of the other stuff has to be changed/uprated to cope with this level of power?

Sorry to sound like a dumbass but this isnt my area..... lol. :)

pritty much the same cost chick.

List of parts for 280+

Exhaust manifold

Turbo (T04E, T4 60-1, T3/T4 been common cheaper choices)

Oil feeds/ return

3" downpipe

Headspacer and gaskets

APR headbolts

38mm wastegate

DV vavle

Intercooler + pipework

C2 fuel kit(injectors, maf housing, software)

Fuel pump

Timing chains if not already replaced is advisable

This kind of set up is thats needed for 280 upto 350/ 400bhp

Only way you can go cheaper with turbo is to run 6 psi (around 250ish bhp)

Parts needed

Manifold

Turbo

3" downpipe

38mm wastegate (believe 44mm better for low boost but if his upgrading later he wants to stick with 38mm)

Oil feed and return

C2 software

DV valve

Timing chains?

Cost depends on quality of parts brought, you can spend £800- £1500 on a good make turbo or £150 on a cheep ebay copy turbo. Custom home made manni and DP for £150 or pre made for £600, same goes for wastegates, DV, Inter coolers ect

Hope this helps Tom :)

you wont need a ecu , for 300 bhp, you'll do that on a rr fpr with stock injectors, the stock pump may or may not take it, they will be well past there comfort zone at 270 bhp.. id go with a 40-44 mm wastegate.. ive got a 38mm , and suffer with a few problems.

id say

manifold, downpipe, turbo, feed/returns, arp bolts , spacer plate, rr fpr ( begi or similar )

you could always use a turbo with a intergral wastegate.. ala cossie or some other garrett variation.

oh add intercooler and pipework plus silicons.

exhaust and filter i assume he already has ?
