mickelson 0
I am fairly new to the VR6 world and would appreciate some good advice on replacement of timing chains. Basically, I need to know when it should be changed, how long it normally takes (i assume it is an engine lift and gearbox seperation), and if doing it myself, gestimated costs of parts required etc. Is it necessary to change engine mounts etc whilst the lump is out?? Any help appreciated. I could simply go to VW dealer but am not keen on their labour prices. Anyone recommend a quality garage in the bournemouth / Salisbury area. Cheers Mick

Nerih 0
www.vwvortex.com look at the DIY thread.....its illustratred and answers all of your questions, just ensure you remember their drivers side is our passenger side.i've heard that $700 (pounds) is not uncommon for this procedure, its quite labour intensive.[ Edited Tue Nov 02 2004, 07:37AM ]

acf8181 0
ok.parts for doing it yourself cost about £100 from gsf...and they sell genuine parts. if you got the parts from vw (and they'd be identical) they cost about twice that.it can be done yourself, but it aint easy. its very very hard to know if you have the timing exactly spot on on the vr6. you can get it to within one tooth accurately, but deciding between which way is right is tricky. theres also the added pressure of knowing theres only about a two tooth tolerance before you kill the engine. other stuff you'll need when doing it...bolts for flywheel (stretch bolts, replace everytime), crank case oil seal (may as well put new one at this time), and clutch if you need it.in retrospect, if you can get somewhere decent (i.e. who know vr's) to do it for about £500 i'd go for it, just so you dont have to go through the hassle. acf8181 0
sorry, i should have said this first...don't change them if they don't need changing!you can check the condition of the runners quite easily. on mine it was the top blade runner than was almost worn thorugh, all the other bits were almost as new, but as i had to take it all off to change that one item it was sensible to replace the lot.you have to remove the inlet manifold, coilpack, aux water pump, cam cover top tensioner bolt and top chain cover. then you can see all the top runners, and see down to the lower runners if you look carefully. mickelson 0
Apologies for my ignorance. I am a timed served mechanic 17 years but specialise in Battle Tanks as I am in the Army. My experience sadly hasnt got as far as playing with this engine yet. Also unfortunate is that I am unable to use our facilities to work on own cars. Wots this army coming too!!!! You refer to the runners??????, more confusingly the top blade runner. I am not thick , honest, just havent looked into the set up yet. i hate to spend money getting the job done when I have the skills to do it myself but annoyingly not the facilities. Thanks for the advice. Anyone want a go on a tank LOL
