hi. i was looking at some turbo kits from the USA. Iv seen kits as cheap as £500. So is it matter of fitting after this cost?

Here is a link to one of the kits that i have seen. I know lots of things need doing i.e engine internals etc if i wanted crazy power. But for 8-10psi what else would i need doing or need to get thats not included in that kit?

well, ive got lower compression and arp head bolts, c2 software isnt a nessisity (spelling) at that boost, mine seems fine butr time will tell.. most of the bay turbo kits are ok, but build quality may be suspect, then again maybe not. and yes the manifold is different and will be in the wrong place.

There are few different garretts turbo's around.

kevhaywire who has experienced a few turbo's had said on another thread that the GT3071R full boosts under 3000 rpm which is to fast imo. The GT3582 which kevhaywire runs now full boosts at 35000rpm which is more like what i want.

Jim Potter,.is your turbo the same as in that link? if so in what rev range do you full boost?

no mines a t3/4 hybrid o spec, good for around 400 bhp , and it starts to spool at around 3500 , and makes full boost from 4000 to the redline. which suits me fine

a fmu , is basically a spring that stops the fuel from returning to the tank and forceing it back through the injectors, these are normally boost dependent, making them ideal for low/mid boost applications, although crude they do seem to work well. be aware that the standard fuel pumps only good for around 270 bhp, depending on age etc..

I'd be surprised if that little turbo can do 30+psi.

The whole lot is $500 cheaper than the Garret GT35R on it's own, so that gives you a clue as to where the savings have been made. It's a cheap copy turbo made in China.

The manifold is the usual low nickel content, ATP clone special you find everywhere on ebay.

Not really a fan of these cheap kits as you can probably tell :-)

turbo as kev said is a cheaP EBAY SPECIAL and at 30 psi would probaly implode. and as said before you would need to change the manifold..if you are intrested, source the bits over here, i did and it still didnt cost the earth. you will also have more tehnical support and backup, of which you may or may not need.

if you look hard enough , you can get all that for around 800 uk pounds over here.

i have a stainless spa turbo one, fit is carp tbh..the other one looks like a copy of another well made unit.. your money , your choice, i dont no however if the high price on the other unit is justified.

There's a guy on E38 using a SPA turbo manifold and is running over 400bhp, the car is on pistonheads if you wanna see how the fit is.

That kit has no instructions and looks to have more than 100 parts so I could see you getting lost unless you know what your doing.

It also has no downpipe which you will have to factor in, that might not be a bad thing as it seems thier one blocks half the turbo, a "snakehead" would be much more beneficial.

Even after saying all that with the dollar so pants at the minute its only £443 and thats frankly stupidly cheap for a turbo set up, finding it hard to not click that buy it now button!

OK, the SPA turbo manifold.

I really like the design of it. It's perfect for RHD cars. Sites the turbo in the correct place behind the block and at a good angle.

Unfortunately the 2 I've had have been absolutely schitt quality. Both had very poor port alignment and one of them cracked.

The second one had to be sent off to a specialist iron worker to be modified at great expense.

I have a suspicion there are copies of the SPA manifold kicknig around, which are the really schitt ones. They have the SPA turbo text ground off, so are easy to spot.

The people who sell them plead ignorance, and they are on here, so be warned.

That Strictly dubs one has the SPA identification on it still, so it might be a proper manifold with the correct port alignment. You want to make sure it aligns properly before parting with your cash.

I would also recomend removing the stock exhaust studs, and drilling and tapping out the holes to accept oversized, uprated ARP exhaust studs. It will save a lot of swearing and heartache!! Believe me!!

So, the SPA manifold is the best one - providing you get a good one.

I don't really like the ATP manifold if I'm honest. It sites the turbo far too high and in RHD cars you have to move the brake resevoir etc. But it's very well made.
