Macca 1
Got a birthday coming up and thought i should do something about the crap stereo/speakers in my car.I am fairly clueless as to head units/ subs/ amps etc. so was really just looking for how id best spend 100-200 quid?I have a kenwood 6 CD changer and head unit, 4 x 40Watts, otherwise standard speakers.Interestingly the sound has never been as good as in my last golf which had a crapper looking Sony tape unit. It was a 96 car though compared to my 94 now: did VW upgrade the standard speakers at some point?
binliner 0
for £200 Id get a pioneer dhp5600 mp3 head unit (£150 online) and upgrade the front speakers with the remaining £50... That will give you a noticeable improvement and the head unit has the necessary outputs to add an amp or 2 & sub later on if you want
acf8181 0
i'd say get a set of caliber CASCV6 components for the fronts doors/dash - http://www.huetcaraudio.co.uk/acatalog/index.html?http%3A//www.huetcaraudio.co.uk/acatalog/Product_Categories_Performance_Component_Series_36.html&CatalogBodythen try and get the best single cd headunit you can, kenwood are usually best value for money, try getting last years models (if they have a few left) at bargain prices. the one to go for are the ones that have bass/mid/treble control (as opposed to just bass/treble) and have crossovers integrated into them.though, having said that, this seems very good - http://www.bassjunkies.com/index.php?cpage=product/browse_detail.php&area=shop&category_id=82&sub_category_id=30&manufacturer_id=498&product_id=29734&show_my_car=&return_link=%2Findex.php%3Fcpage%3Dproduct%2Fpromotion.php%26area%3Dshop&source=promotion
acf8181 0
then save up for an amp and a sub (JL audio 10" in a seled box is my fav, and i find it works well even with a legacy amp!)
vdubgirl 3
You may be lucky keep an eye on ebay and classifieds for second hand barginsFor around the 200 mark you should be able to get headunit amp and boxed sub. you could get away with you standard speakers for a bit until you can afford to get them upgraded :-) BTW I have 2 x 12" kickers boxed for around £60 ;-) and you can get 2nd hand amps for under 100 and 2nd hand headunit £50 - £60 ;-)

Macca 1
Totally forgot i posted this! thanks for the replies.I went to a car audio place and they were v helpful. I think im going to stick with my kenwood head unit as i think its ok - it has the bass, mid and treble EQ settings.Decision is between some 6x9s or an amp and sub. Sub sounded a bit OTT i thought. acf8181 0
er...6x9's are crap! sorry, but they are.you have o.e. spaces for 6" speakers all round, why would you put some speakers where there isn't a space already for them! seems like wierd advise.amp and sub is the way to go. six appeal 53
If I was you mate I spend a little bit of time on the forums getting yourself a nice second hand amp and sub set up, and then get some components for the front with the change! You can get some real 2nd hand ICE bargains out there!
