acf8181 0
...by one tooth on each camshaft?cause i may have done it accidently...and i'm very worried.weird bit was car ran sweet as, until it got over 3000rpm (i didn't go much higher than that) where it seemed as though it had lost cylinders.so re-checked it and set it right...but it didn't start very well, and sounded like it was off some cylinders all the time (but had sparks to all cylinders)
ingham 5
hard one just recheck it all (check that your not 180 degrees out on cam timing (but to be honest not sure))remember cams turn 1/2 speed to crankensure tdc is tdc (top dead centre)turn crank after tdc and ensure exhust vavle opens (ensure that you are turning engine over correct way ie the way engine runs)hard one as never worked on a vr(but its 4stroke so will apllie) [ Edited Sun Aug 01 2004, 01:00PM ][ Edited Sun Aug 01 2004, 04:22PM ]
ingham 5
i once fitted a cam belt to a mk1 gti and got it one tooth out and when i started it ,it sounded like diesel cos valves hit pistons slightly, and that was ok when put right . so dont worry
acf8181 0
how can i tell if the cams are 180 out...this has been on my mind as well.

FishWick 21
The cam lobes at the sprocket end should point up when at TDC. If they're pointing down, they are 180 out. A very easy mistake to make. Did you use the correct VW plastic alignment tool? You can go 1 tooth out and the engine will run. 2 teeth out and valves hit pistons.
jcorallo 0
how can i tell if the cams are 180 out...this has been on my mind as well.you can tell this as the slot in the end of the cams is offset. To be correct, the slot has to be on the upper side of centre when the engine is at TDC on cyl 1.If they were out by 180, the slot would be on the lower side.Cheers,Jules
acf8181 0
ok, i ended up taking it to a garage...gonna be a monster labour bill as they had to take the 'box of again. found it was 4 teeth out at the bottom (which i don't understand as i'm sure it was correct). but anyway, it should be back sweet as soon.
