ENGINE TUNING TIPS

Recommended Posts

elo. i currently own a golf which has been converted to a vr6. the guy i bought it off told me the ECU has been custom made and it has various new cams and pulleys, induction kit, cat-back miltek exhaust, the guy told me it had been rolling road tested and currently is at 210bhp. what else can i do improve the BHP and the costs of these modifications?

thanks

Supercharge it...

prices start at aprox £1100 for a second hand ZR2. On top of that you'll need a remap which will add about another £450 (might be a lot less, depends on what exactly he means by 'custom made' ECU) bigger injectors and a decat would help as well. That lot should be good for around 280bhp

Also worht considering an oil cooler and maybe water injection as well

If you want more power than that a vortech charger or turbo is the way forward

Wow there, looks liek we have a newbie!!! only joking.

6 branch exhaust manifold

rado tb - Corrado Throttle body

vortech are a company who make superchargers

You'll really need to search around for vr6 specialists. MJM Autohaus and ecs tuning in america are pretty good and have a great selection of vr6 parts.

Good luck with it and I hope you have a healthy bank balance because typically VR6 power isn't cheap.

mines obd1. whats a 6 branch? i dont want a decat as it would make the exhaust too loud. Whats a rado tb? what is a vortech charger and how much would it cost? where can i get the bigger injectors? how much would ported and polished head cost?

If you went for forced induction then a decat is essential really... made a 20bhp difference on mine!

A corrado throttle body is bigger than a golf one and will be a straight swap on your car... I think theyre about £100 but not sure

Vortech chargers cost around £2300 and are just a different make of supercharger but able to produce more boost than a ZR2

Dont know how much the head work will cost or how much difference it will make... speak to someone like stealth racing or the phirm

ported and polished is having the ports on the manifolds matched up with those on the head, removing rough catings and smoothing the surface to improve gas flow

all I can think of for £200 ish that you havent already got is a 6 branch... btw didnt it say something about cams and pulleys originally?

If I were you badboy I'd ring up Stealh Racing. They are very near you if you're in the west midlands. A guy called Vince owns Stealth and is an expert when it comes to tuning the VR to its limits etc. Very experienced (one of the best in the UK too and very good value). He will tell you where to best spend your money and where not to bother. Basically if you already have 210bhp you are at the limits of the tuning that can be done without going the forced induction route or spending huge money on more n/a tuning methods. In my own experience a stainless steel six branch exhaust manifold will do very little to increase your power and will cause more problems than you started with as they are very prone to shearing/blowing. Stealth told me that they make very little difference to either n/a or forced induction cars. They don't make the car more noisier...not mine anyway. Vince will tell you what to buy with the money you have. From the sounds of it arb's (anti-roll bars) would be a good idea to improve the handling as that is a weak point of a standard vr6. Not sure on the cost to fit them though - could be costly ..not sure. Stealth also have a rolling road and for £50 will give you a full read out and make sure your car is running properly - he'll also be able to tell if your car is running cams. However the only true way to find out if your car is running cams is to take the top of the engine apart. Not sure what the seller meant when he told you it had pulleys. I maybe wrong but I don't think vernier pulleys can be fitted to the VR..might be wrong on this though. someone else on here will confirm that. All the vernier pulley would do anyway is to set the cam timing, not increase power. How does the car drive? Is the power delivery smooth all through the revs?

a manifold on its own wont make the exhaust any louder.....dont worry!! its only when u change the rear section is when you notice the acoustics change!. i would imagine you would only notice the difference in the bhp when you get the rest of the exhaust sorted....i.e de-cat, stainless system and get it re-mapped
