Paul1982 0
Well i have been really thinking about this lads/ladies.My mk3 vr6 is awesome, sounds just amazing and i have it looking just how i've always wanted one to look.BUT!!I really wanna supercharge it in the next few months. But she is coming up to the 100k mark soon so the charger will take it out on her.So i'd have to recon the head - change the drive chain, upgrade the clutch and probably alot more.So was thinking about getting an R32 lump and dropping her in. You can pick one up with the gearbox etc for cheap enough then charging her.But just been reading up on the R36 3.6 282bhp standard which is found in the american passat. The engine dimensions are the same as the R32 which we all know they fit in the MK3 and it has loads more torque and better interals. The same engine is in the new Audi's in a 300bhp form so i guess the ECU is mapped differently.I'd still wanna supercharge her so the power would be looking like over 400bhp. This then would mean the car would struggle with it being FWD.So how hard is it 2 convert the MK3 to 4wd???Plus does anyone know if someone has done this before and the results they are getting??What do u guys think? Earwig 89
As far as I am aware the new R36 is bigger than the old R32 engine and as such will not fit into the Golf. This was the reason given as to why there would be no Golf version of the R36.As for converting the MK3 to 4WD, sure it can be done but sourcing the parts is hard and the work involved in HUGE!!Your best bet would be to try and find a good Syncro :-)Mark. Paul1982 0
Thats not what the americans say - the angle of the V6 is different to the r32 which makes it a little wider but only a few cm's -http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2353052&uid=273440&postid=31997043

VR6Pete 1,455
Or just get your engine rebuilt and supercharge it....Would be the cheapest option of the lot, and I'm doing just that with my VR.Pete

Paul1982 0
Hi Pete, so what you looking at spending in total to recon the engine and what spec do you think it will be at.Been looking on Ebay and it looks like you can pick up a R32 engine and gearbox etc for just over £1k which is cheap as hell and you'll have a 240bhp standard engine.Supercharger that beast and you'll have her upto 495bhp for 5'ish grand. So £6-7k you'll have a monster lol

antera309 3
I've researched the R32-into-mk3 conversion thoroughly and here's the deal:Physically fitting the R32 lump into a mk3 VR is not difficult - the engine is a straight swap for the VR6 lump as long as you re-use your existing gearbox, clutch, flywheel & engine mounts. Some minor modification is needed to the underbonnet pipework, but it's not much harder than a like-for-like swap with another VR6 lump.As is the case with all the mk4 power plants, things start to get tricky when you come to the wiring & electronics. Unless you plan to fit the mk4 dash as well, you will need to have the immobiliser programmed out of the R32 ECU to avoid having to use the mk4 clocks, transponder & key. Both AMD and most Revo dealers can do this.Next, the R32 is drive-by-wire, so you need to remove the mk3 accelerator pedal and weld the mk4 DBW one in. Then you have to remove all the braiding from the mk4 engine wiring loom, cut out all the wiring you don't need (e.g. ABS, Climatronic etc) and then wrap it back up. Like I say, tricky, but if you're OK at reading wiring diagrams, it's perfectly do-able.The final barrier between you and your 260BHP-with-factory-reliability mk3 is the downpipe & cats. Yes - catS, plural. The R32 has two - one for each bank of cylinders. The R32 also has 4 lambda probes - one before and one after each cat and these have to be incorporated too if you want it to run like factory. As long as you have the stock R32 downpipe, cats & lambdas, an exhaust fabricator should be able to knock together a custom setup for you using the mk4 cats, the top half of the mk4 downpipe and making up the rest from scratch. You can retain your existing cat-back exhaust system, but you may as well get the fabricator to do the whole lot, to be honest. The fabricator will need the whole car with R32 engine already fitted to do this. The whole car therefore has to be trailered to their premises for the work to be done. But assuming all the electrical stuff is sorted first, you should be able to drive it home!!!Fitting the Haldex 4wd system to a mk3 is possible, but it's a HUGE job, even for an expert welder. If you really want 4wd, buying a VR6 Syncro as the base car and retaining the stock gearbox & 4wd is by far the easiest option. As for the 3.6 engine - transplanting this into a mk3 has never been attempted as far as I know. It does have a totally different engine block to the 3.2, so I couldn't say if the VR6 engine mounts, gearbox etc would fit it. It would be a case of "try it and see".Hope this helps.
