VR6 Crankcase Oil Scraper/MK3 vs MK4 Sump Discussion

Recommended Posts

I agree, no need for it unless your revving over 8k, however, some of the replies on here make me laugh.

How can it look dodgy??? It serves a purpose, and why would it break up.......plenty of engine parts can break up.

If you dont know what your on about, keep your thoughts to yourself.

I prefer the solid PTFE scrapers personally. You fit the supplied 'generic' VR6 one which won't have been clearanced, and then you wind the crank round by hand a few times and it 'cuts' it's own unique profile into the scraper. Sounds brutal but it's not, it's a sound method.

Probably no real gains in a VR in the real world and there is a point to revving a VR to and past 7000rpm. Vr6 turbos are making power up there, lots of power, so a set of shrick valve springs will stop valve bounce.

N/A VRs with lightened flywheels and 268s are happy to rev to and past 7K aswell.

Personally, the best oil related mods for me are:-

Oil cooler

24V oil sump (internally baffled)

My engine is currently in bits and was wondering about this, there is a few 180 deg bends round my way and after the bottom end failure want to eliminate oil surge would a scrapper be better of a baffled sump.

Doesn't the baffled 24v sump sit a little lower?

If anything the 24V sump looks a little shallower than the steel one. It's got some serious baffling in it, so should cure your cornering surge.

You also need the 24V dipstick, dipstick tube and sump bolts. The whole lot is £110 from VW, which isn't bad considering the standard pressed Steel one + gasket is £75 and isn't baffled.

Really early 24V sumps from 4 motions didn't have the oil condition sensor in the sump, but it seems VW no longer do them, so it's an R32 sump (with sensor) or nothing now, but you just leave the sensor disconnnected.

The sump is silicon sealed to the block, so doesn't leak like the steel one does.

I've just had to buy a new 24v sump for my VR... mine has a crack in it, only a very small one, but enough to be leaking oil from it.

Luckily, I've already got the longer dip stick etc.. so just a straight swap.

I could look into getting a group buy set up for these if there is enough interest?

I've got some pictures here you might like to look at... I'll get em uploaded in a second.

Yes, I perhaps should have expanded on that abit, Thanks for pointing that out Steve.

My Point, I like it how companies try to sell you products that you dont actually need, and all they want to do is make a few quid on products that have claims such as that.

Personally, I like to live on the cautious side of things and dont fancy seeing what happens if it broke inside my engine.

Here are some photo's comparing the standard VR6 sump to the 24v baffled one.

is this in addition to the sump gasket?

Are these easy to tap for an oil drain lines from chargers?

I'm going through the same questions, cadguy, Vince said he would find out for me.

errm, I think 127.99 +VAT cant remember if that was a group buy price or individually, this price was from march 2005, so its probably different now.

Just found this email though with regards to the dipstick...

We have sorted the dipstick problem out. If you put in 8 litres of oil it registers as normal on the original dipstick, with the longer dipstick and holder it registers as normal with the factory 6 litres.

You should have taken snaps of my R32 sump as that has the plastic baffles in it. It was also on Vince's counter last time I saw it!

The sump is siliconed on in place of the gasket, not in addition to, although you could use the gasket instead of the silicon.

The sump is nice and thick so should tap nicely for the oil return. Vince has my 1/2" pipe tap for doing that, which anyone is welcome to borrow.
