The 'noise at 2k' is the chains...

Recommended Posts

As most of you have probably read in my previous post I have got a noise/rattle at 2k rpm on my vr, it's been bugging me and despite people (including mechanics) telling me it's nothing to worry about I took it to a specialist to put my mind at rest...

Anyway, got there and the workshop has several VR6 engined cars, Golfs, Corrados, couple of mk2's and a mk2 vr van lol, also a new rs4, a lotus carlton, a maserati etc Lots of nice cars anyway. Chatted to the guy for a bit and he took a look round the car and after a good listen under the bonnet he concluded that the chains needed doing.

Bummer.

I have booked it in for two weeks today, he has said it will be approx £600 for chains including all the guides and tensioners, the whole shabang and also a new clutch, using all original parts. I get a free courtesy car too.

As well as the above he is breaking a VR6 Golf to do a vr mk2 conversion and has for sale a Stainless steel Scorpion cat back exhaust system, letterbox style and said he could supply and fit it for an extra £120. The system is a couple of months old max.

Please give me your thoughts!

Mine are a tiny bit rattly & Im on 74k (OBD2) - people cant tell u they dont need doing just because of the engine/mileage, if they need doing they need doing! Tim @ the phirm listened to mine and said it didnt need doing, apparently they sound like a sewing machine when they do ha ha

Yeah my thoughts entirely, to be fair the original chains are over 10 years old, at least once they are done i will have that piece of mind and can enjoy it again :)

Haha it doesn't sound like a sewing machine yet but there is a definate rattle.

Yes it can. The Phirm would check this for free mate (its a 5 min job) but would put your mind at rest and believe me they and Stealth are the best in the UK when it comes to the vr lump. Take your car to someone recommended on here who you can trust as it is a big job (and there are a few dodgy companies out there..I know!) and if done incorrectly will cause you to pay out a LOT more in the long run to get the problems fixed. Worth mentioning that The Phirm do all the cars for VW Performance magazine - quite funny when you go down to their garage and occasionally see a nice motor you saw in the mag you read a while back. The Phirm are very close to you too if you're in Reading and they charge the same as a local garage.

Is it possible to check this bolt at home? Im in the same boat with the rattling on 71k and my cars booked in for a service at the phirm in about 3 weeks but would like to check it out before that. Oh and the Phirm have said if the chains need doing, its about £700 which includes a new clutch. Pretty reasonable and you can definitely trust them to do a proper job.

I know the phirm are top dogs but although they are relatively near, the place im going to is 5 mins away and i know they have done lots of vr conversions plus the guy drives the mk2 vr van that he built himself so reckon they are good. Oh and i dont want to wait 3 weeks!

The garage is called Autosolutions, it came recomended to me by a friend of mine who is another mechanic. I will let you all know how it all goes. I dont think there are many people from my area though are there? Garage is about 10 mins from Reading centre by the way.
