hi everyone at vr6oc this is my first post and i think i have a major problem with my golf vr6 1992 when idling the noise is not there but when you pick the revs up there seems to be a rattlely noise coming from the left hand side of the engine (when standing at the front) i have been told that it could be the timing chain it has done 134000 miles. Can anyone shed any light or ideas on this, any help would be great

sounds like it...... use a screwdriver and put on left side of engine and place on ear. (remember not to wear a tie and get pulled into the engine!) It will let you hear it better. They usually need doing by 100k so check if yours were done!

Or use the premium member zone as there's a sound byte and help there.

Quite an easy fix - again there is support on here for the way to do it!

hi, the timing chain is to the right side of the engine when standing at front, chains are between block and gearbox. if its coming from left it could be water pump, tensioner pulley etc check for play on both, my pump went and it made a hell of a noise!

hope this helps m8.

It could be your chains.. pinpointing where a noise comes from can be pretty hard when the engine is running. The garage who did the head work wouldn't have done the chains as they have to remove the gearbox to gain access to either of the chains. Price wise you're looking at between £600-800. Not a quick fix I'm afraid due to the lengthy labour involved removing the gearbox.
