acf8181 0
you had the knowledge of vr6's that you have now?i'd have never bought one with more than 70k on it, for the fact that timing chains (well, tensioners and runners at least) have to be replaced at about 120k, and this requires 'box removal.all i heard when i was looking for one was that they rarely need changing!i'd also have made sure it didn't have half as many things wearing out as mine does.i suppose i should be thankful that upto this point i'd had it for a year with no problems...then they all hit!i'm now at the point of no return, i've spent so much on it, its better to spend a few hundred quid to finish fixing all the worn out bits and then keep the car till it really dies! P.S: if you're wondering about the colour, i've decided there wasn't enough red in my posts! [lol]
Geastb 0
I exactly wot your saying! Mines a bit like that - 140k and things are starting to go wrong! But i've just bought FK coilovers, new wheels, the £2k stereo is going in on wednesday, i'm getting new mk4 lights and its getting the archs rolled and a respray, then it will be 17's and who knows what next?Wouldn't be without her now!!! acf8181 0
i shoudn't really complain i suppose, the bodywork on mine is really good for the mileage, its not perfect, but i've being payin a lot of attention to other peoples k plate vr6/gti mkIII's and they mostly seem to be in a right mess. i don't really have any rust issues (touch wood), and i have no scratches as all. a couple of dings and some stonechips is it really. Geastb 0
Got a bit of small dent on front drivers side nr headlight. bit of rust on leading edge of bonnet and on bottom part of front doors and the usual rust on tailgate on rh side bottom of window - mine aint too bad really - looks real nice after a zymol wax! FishWick 21
Not sure about the red mate...Persevere with it. I bought my Corrado VR with 73K on it. Full dealer history etc etc and I had 20,000 sublime miles from it, then it started going pear shaped. Nothing drastic, just the odd running issue here and there. It's never broken down, burnt oil, lost fluids or anything. It's just my own fastidiousness that has ended up with me spending £5000 on it in 18 months. Yeah the chains....well, not much we can do about that cause VW didn't have the forethought to use solid tensioners, but they learned that mistake with the MK4.Anyway, keep it going, you'll be glad in the end, I hope! If it's any consolation, BMW 323 and M3 owners face the same chain predicament, as do Audi A4 V8 drivers, only you're looking at nearly £1500 to do the chains on the Bimmers, also at 100KI can guarantee if you bought a hatch from Renault or Ford etc, you'd miss the VR. MarkGolf 6
Im a bit pissed!Going to be pulling the engine out... Think instead of throwing my engine into my car for the sake of having it in there straight away, im going to keep it hanging about and save up a little bit so I can replace all the timing chains and tensioners e.t.c.Be worth it in the long run! Rebuilding the internals, so shud be a pretty sound engine which I hope to drive hard and hopefully it'll last!If a VR6 has had a FULL VW service history and has done 107k, you think any of this has been changed?? Haven't got allll the VW bills, so can't read up on it..
FishWick 21
At 107K with FSH, VW won't have changed the chains. As far as they are concerned, they're fitted for life. Their faces are a picture when you get a quote for chain replacement! My dealer quoted me £1000 and I told them they're a bunch of idiots if they think I'd pay that and let them set the timing a tooth out. Stealth all the way!
Guest Olly_K
agree with stealth all the way. If i knew then what i knew now, i would NEVER of bought one. But i've spent so much money trying to make it fast (which it still isnt) if i sell it i'd loose thousands ! I think i might sell it as bits.
acf8181 0
well, i've spent so much already that i may as well keep it. also, if i sold it i'd be in a predicament...theres no other car that goes as well and feels as new for £3k. only other cars i considered are mkII MR2 which is too small, and E36 325 which feels old unless you get a newer one which costs more.so i'm stuck with it!p.s. the reds stayin - makes it easy to find my posts
