  1. I need a rear left brake caliper.  I've tried TPS, GSF etc and cant seem to source an OE one or a quality aftermarket one.

2nd hand one is viable, but would it still be better than an aftermarket new unit?

I've seen a few on ebay, are they cheap for a reason? anyone had any experiences with them?

  2. Been a bit of a lurker on this forum and thought it was time to start my first build thread!

Had my mk2 for a couple years and have always wanted a VR in it.

Here it was before it was off road two summer ago in all its glory

Fast forward to this summer, i began the strip down. Having spent the last 2 years collecting parts for the conversion, the donor car and well, parts i didn't need but i wanted lol.

With donor car (parts are up for grabs still check cars for sale)

While i was stripping apart the mk2, i purchased a VR engine along with a de-immob loom, perfect for plug in play in a mk2 and a 6 branch. And i had the donor car for everything else.  Engine i purchased alone was sat round for a while so i decided to rebuild it with some extra goodies too

Took the engine to my uncles garage, and began the tear down.

The "goodies" i purchased from https://vr6parts.com/ schimmel performance in other words.  They have some top quality stuff. ill post the build below but, just give you the spec:

    - 2.8 OBD2

    - 6 branch to 3" exhaust

    - MK4 triple layer headgasket

    - New guides, chains and tensioners

    - 263 SP cams

    - New genuine hydraulic lifters

    - SP valve guides

    - SP heavy duty valve springs

    - SP valve seals

    - SP titanium retainers

    - SP high flow water pump

    - Metal crack pipe

    - All gaskets and seals replaced

    - New starter motor and alternator

    - light weight under pullies

    - 2.3 V5 gearbox with diesel 5th and lightened flywheel

Gave the block and good clean and degrease.

Checked it over, no scoring off the bores and pistons just head carbon build up which i cleaned up.  It did shows signs of the 144k odd it done!

    Head got the same treatment...

Whipped the cams out, lifters had seen better days so they where replaced.

Most the engine build took place over summer ...ill update with pics etc tomorrow

    thanks for reading

  3. oemandmore got back to me and although theyre not listed on there site as its discontinued they still stock the rears at £35 each

    fronts are unavailable!

is it necessary to run these shields? im sure people who have refreshed they're brakes must of come across this problem!

  4. I think it was about 1-2 weeks, not entirely sure to be honest!

I personally would change them just for piece of mind and since you intend putting cams in, you might as well change them.  Also depends on what cams you choose also, 268s im pretty sure you would have to upgrade the springs.

My guides had seen better days to be honest, stems where fine though.

  5. I just finished up building my top end, I got my parts from https://vr6parts.com/ (schimmel performace) over in the states.  They got pretty much everything you need to rebuild a VR

I got the following from then:

    titanium springs

    retainers

    stem seals

    high flow water pump

    ARP flywheel studs

    SP 263 cams

fairly reasonable prices but you do have to pay customs tax which is a bit.

I got genuine OE lifters off ebay though.

Headgasket I opted for the MK4 V6 triple metal layer one

  6. Hi everyone.

Posted on here once or twice before but haven't introduced myself.

Currently, rebuilding a vr6 engine to fit into my mk2.  Should be fun with SP 263's, lightened fly wheel and a V5 box on it :D

Anyway, I'm struggling to find some brake splash shields as, mine are completely rotten as they commonly are.

Ebay sells the fronts individually for around £43 (including postage) for genuine OE.

Is there an aftermarket alternative? preferably in a set with rears too, as i'm guessing these are now obsolete.

    Thanks!
