  1. anyone had this?? Did a search on the net and there seems to be lots of people getting this on Fiats... but nothing conclusive.... could it be something simple like a borken split pin securing the CV joint? or is it more likely the CV joint itself? any thoughts?
  2. Whilst my car was up on the ramps i thought I'd look into the knocking noise I've been getting from the nearside front wheel, and noticed I can move the drive shaft on that side about 2/3mm each way, which is what i think is causing the knocking noise. Is this play normal, and if not what is the likely cause...... and what's the cheapest but safe way of fixing it? Thanks as always... Ian
  3. WayHay!!!!!! got the F$%ker out with a plumbers wrench!!! now..... what the hell do i use to clean it.... i really must get more prepared for doing jobs like this!!
  4. I'm having a go at just cleaning it first.... trying to save cash (or not spend cash i haven't got...) looks like i maybe stuffed though....
  5. Hi, I believe I have a problem with the Lambda sensor and so was going to remove it tonight and give it clean, I know it's getting late but I'm praying there's someone on here who's done this as I can't see anyway to get it out... it's on the TOP of the exhaust just before the cat, and even if i managed to get my adjustable spanner on to it there's no room to turn it.. do the wires unplug somehow to allow me to get my socket spanner onto it?? any help appreciated as I've finally got it up the ramps (after removing the front skirt) and really want to have a go at this... Thanks Ian
  6. Just brought myself a set of Ramps of E-bay, that are actually wide enought for 205 tyres (most of them are only 200mm wide).... got them home, tried to drive up but that front splitter just keeps catching and bending under.... has anyone come up with a safe way of using standard ramps with their VR6. I don't "think" mine is lowered... but that splitter is pretty low!! I need to get under there and brought the ramps to make it easy.... chance would be a fine thing!!! Are the splitters removable (easily and without damage?)
  7. thanks for the quick response!! I'm trying to figure out where the smell of petrol is coming from and it seemed strongest around the solenoid valve... (now i know what it is)... the other thing i'v noticed is that despite driving like miss daisy, my fuel consumption doesn't seem to get beyond 16mpg..... i notice the solenoid valve has an electrical connection on it, if that was wrong would it lead to excessive mpg?
  8. How well do you know your VR6 engines.. can you name these parts?... Part 1.... Part 2..... - the bit with the two pipes coming out And for bonus points.... let me know which of the pipes in this photo carry fuel.....
  9. Hi all, For the past couple of days, when I've driven off in the morning i've noticed a smell of petrol (admittedly with my window wound right down) which lasts for about the first half mile and then goes, it doesn't come back even when the car is parked up for a few hours at work and i go out at lunch or go home in the evening. It's parked on slope at home if that makes any difference? Anyone got any ideas'w what to check and how...
  10. Thanks, will try that... I think it has at least 4 gears, the "gearstick" has P, R,N, D, 3,2 1 on it and there is definitely some more gears beyond 3... how do you change the oil (VW say specialist tools are required, why??) and where is the filter etc.... Any help / guidance / photos appreciated,,,,,
  11. Any idea how much spray you should use and if you should prise the metal mesh of the end of the sensor before spraying? Got the guide of here but it doesn't say about this.....
  12. also how much should i spray on? should i soak it or give it a light dusting?
  13. okay, brought some elvctrical contact cleaner today, so going to hopefully have a go at this tonight, however should I pry the mesh off the end of the MAS before spraying or should I leave that in place and spray from a few inches back (can't imagine much will get in if i do).... want to make sure i do this properly....I have printed off the guide on here, but it is unclear...
  14. Thanks Gav... given the price of replacement I decided against it and just wiped the mesh at the front with a clean cloth, which did bring off quite a lot of black, so the chances are the MAS does need cleaning, will get something from local car spares place tomorrow, and just put up with the stalling (and the beeping!!), being an auto it's hard to keep it revving and then pull away cleanly.... Would the coil pack be effected by heat, as like i said, at first start up and running it's fine... i have noticed some sort of code flashing up when i start the car on the mileometer no 1073 or somethi
  15. have just taken the MAF out and it looks all clean and air filter looks okayish.... any quick fixes i can do?? need to get this sorted tonight if poss??
  16. Damn! Phoned Mr Clutch but they said they wouldn't touch it, because it was electrically controlled (ECU). surely if you can get the plugs in and out it's just a case of draining and then filling... has anyone done this here at all?? Really wishing I hadn't got an auto!!
  17. have similar problem started recently - particularly bad tonight on the way home when the air (outside) was very hot (30 degrees). It starts fine and idles okay to begin with but once it gets hot It starts to die you come off the revs and after about 2000 revs it's fine but under that is very rough.... only started in the past couple of weeks..... can I use WD40 to clean the MAS? and what is the ISV and where it is to be found.... and how do you clean it? Thanks, want to have a go at this tonight as it stalled 4 times on the way home and I've got to go on a site visit tomorrow! please help!!!
  18. Have you ever done this? I really don't want to hand over £160 notes to VW just to change some fluid, but wonder how you know where to fill it up to. It says to check the level when it's warmed through, but obviously when you put it in it will be cold..... Also, currently when i check the dipstick it actually looks high, but is an oily brown colour rather than red, is this just due to wear, or is it likely than someone's just put normal gearbox oil in (hence all the problems)..... Any advice greatly appreciated... trying to buy some ramps to do this and another job with off e-bay at the momen
  19. have a repeated knocking sound coming from the N/S wheel / suspension area. It was noticeable before, but has now got worse after hitting a massive pothole... it does it when driving it a straight line, round bends, basically wherever the tarmac isn't smooth.... what is the most likely cause of this and is it dangerous?
  20. I have the same and it's now worse after I hit a pothole and split my tyre, driving with the space saver on at the moment it's got really annoying, anything than perfectly smooth tarmac gives a knocking noise. The previous owner replaced the wishbones on that side, what's the most likely thing it could be in this case.... link rods, bushes or top mount? and any guides on here on how to change any of those?
  21. It's a 93/94 Import from Hong Kong (Not sure if that makes a difference) and it's definitely the gearbox dipstick, the engine oil dipstick is at the front and the oil is a nice brown colour, the gearbox one is ti the right of the engine block, buried quite deep down and is as described in the owners manual... I will try and get some pics tonight, i guess if it's low that means there's a leak somewhere... which could explain my earlier thread about the smell of oil in the cabin....... I'll try topping up through the dipstick hole and see if that helps.... any idea if i should be using ATF or Ge
  22. Hi, I am pretty sure the gearbox Oil on my Golf MkIII VR6 Auto needs topping up as when i pull the dipstick out (once everything is nice and hot) it is below the indented part of the dipstick .. it looks a bit like this ==>--<== and i think the oil should show on the -- bit.... if this makes any sense at all.... First question, as it's an automatic is this gearbox oil (it looks very black) or is it very dirty ATF... and how do you top it up.... i can't see a filler cap anywhere for it and the owners guide says the usual "it should be done by VW)..... I did a search on here to see if ther
  23. Did you ever do this? I have an Auto which has a few issues/glitches/design faults (who knows which!)... and switching to a manual would be perfect....
  24. Hi There, Mr Newbie again, I'm looking for a step by step guide on changing the Front pads on a 1994 VR6 Golf. I have changed pads on a Nova, Calibra, Xantia and Focus before but each one has it's own peculiarities so wanted an idiots guide to doing it on a VR6.... did a search but couldn't see anything in the FAQ's... I'm sure there must be one on here somewhere.........
