  1. Once the chains start to rattle there is only one way I am afraid. Have the same problem with mine also a 1997 model. Has only 55k on the clock. The problem is a bad oil-pump that is giving too much pressure as I have read in several other forums on the Internet. The too high pressure on the tensioners has streched the chains so I don´t think you can do much to change that. New chains, tensioners and what else comes with the chains - and a new oilpump. that should do it. The oilpressure must not increase 7 bar on a cold engine - but the faulty oilpumps has been seen to give anything from 10-1
  2. Have the same problem with my VR6 1997 OBDII and that also has only 55k on the clock. The chains rattle at 1800-2000 revs. Have studied this problem on other forums. Seems like too high oil pressure can be the problem so that the chains can be streched. It the oil-pump is a valve that should open if the pressure is too high. That has been a problem in the VR-engine that this valve does not open so that the oilpressure increases to over 7 bar wich is the max. pressure for a cold engine. It has been seen that oil-pressure in a VR engine can be as high as 18 bar because of that stuck valve in the
  3. It would help if you told how old your VR is. If it is from 1992-1995 you have an electronic idle-speed device that is known to cause problems when getting older. If it is from 1996-1997 the idle-speed is controlled by the throttle valve and that might just be dirty and needs cleaning.
