  1. Thanks Kalv, I think I can take the glovebox out complete (mine is airbag model) to get better access to the rear of the head unit. The aerial cable (I assumed) runs down the A pillar - why would I take the passenger seat out?
  2. Cheers for the encouragement! Yeh the harness is fine so I might well have a go myself. TBH the only thing which is worrying me is the aerial replacement. I have read a few threads here but no-one goes into the specifics about replacing an aerial in its entirety. So, I have 2 questions: 1. Has anyone gone about installing a USB cable/Ipod/Bluetooth in their glovebox (and how did it work out)?? Specifically the Kenwood variety... 2. Has anyone gone about installing a replacement aerial inc. the cable? Any advice or even some mild ridicule will be appreciated!
  3. I remember reading a post about someone who got theirs re-trimmed from a guy in Germany off ebay. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find it. Looked very smart with stitching in colour of your choice I think.
  4. Got a new kenwood head unit, bluetooth module and ipod module to fit. Also have got a new aerial (base, cable... the lot) Anyone know how much I should be paying to have it all fitted? I would do it myself but I have no driveway/garage at the mo and electrics aren't my thing anyway..
  5. Go to Maplin - Aerial, base and 4m cable for £4.99. Exactly the same as OEM.
  6. Found this: http://www.scorpionauto.com/index.html apparently scorpion do still exist and they can supply new alarm fobs & program them! Result..
  7. I too have a standard full closure VW alarm. The keyfob is a bit knackered (although it still works) and I was wondering whether I can get a spare/replacement (VW or otherwise). Any advice greatly appreciated...
  8. Just bought a new headunit to replace the decrepit Panasonic CD player I was landed with when I bought the VR6. Now bear with me... do I need a wiring harness/adaptor to save me having to chop and solder the wiring together? If so, where can I find out what I need (Halfords?). The connectors from the VRs wiring loom are the usual black one for power & brown for speakers.
  9. Thanks all. Gonna take the sill protectors off this weekend (God knows what I'll find!) so I'll take the universal persuader to the heat shield as well. I take it'll be OK for the MOT?
  10. I just got some VW logo ones off Ebay £21 inc P&P (new genuine VW). Try this search: http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&satitle=bbs+wheel+caps
  11. Looking at Goodridge Stainless Steel ones and was wondering if they're worth it? Also, do I need braided hoses as well as pipes?
  12. Is the only place to get one of these from VW? Checked GSF and a few others and couldn't find anyone supplying heat shields. The shield itself is kinda OK, but the retaining bolts and holes are badly corroded and it's hanging off clattering about. Any ideas peeps?
  13. My old man has a 94 1.4CL 117k and I was surprised how tight the gearbox felt. My VR seems so much more sloppy (esp. in gear) compared to this. Sometimes gears are a bit hard to engage. Are there easy bushes or ball joints I can replace to tighten it up a bit?
  14. Cheers for the advice Matt. I took it aslong to this guy yesterday - he does know pretty much everything about all cars. He told me what I knew already about the car (Oil, Antifreeze, known problems like the timing chains/head gasket/oil use etc) which made me feel a bit better. Its booked in on Monday week for discs/pads, wheel bearing and a major service. When I phoned the VW place, I asked what the major service (quoted £220) included - the girl just said "everything" but couldn't tell me if they would charge me for new plugs (NJK ones fitted >15k ago). Didn't inspire confidence!!
  15. My VR is due a major service (1996P 78k) and I'm contemplating going to the local VW dealer (a mate has a 2005 GTI & is pleased with the service he gets there). Alternatively, I could go to a local garage (shed in back garden job - but very good as my old man uses this guy). The car has had main dealer stamps since new. If I was to sell the car in 2 years or so would main dealer servicing from new help to sell it on/retain the car's value that much? I am leaning towards the main dealer at the moment... Any advice would be welcome...
  16. No probs - thanks for the quick response!
