Ah yeah sorry about that. Really? Considering it was fine before I removed and refitted it? I know you're supposed to replace them after so long when refitting gearboxes but just seemed strange as it was perfect before, then once installed has gone. Damn, gonna be a pain and a half to take the gearbox out again, have just changed the engine hah. Thanks

I have a bit of a rattle from the timing chain side of the engine, but sounds like it's either coming from the chain area or the clutch/flywheel area. At first I thought it was chains, but the it goes away when you press the clutch down. You can hear it at idle, and it gets faster as you raise the engine revs too. I did have the gearbox off the engine, but it went back together ok. I haven't tried it in gear yet because the driveshafts are still disconnected, but has anyone heard of or had this problem before? Cheers

Ok, had another look today and i see how the cable goes on now, before i had the pedal on the floor so could not see the lever. Now my problem is that the bit where the ball of the cable clips into is fractured where i left the cable in when removing the engine, so it obviously wont stay there. Is this cheap/easy enough to replace or not? On first looks i'd say no, but anyone else? Also any ideas for a quick fix to keep the ball attached to the lever? Cheers

Ahh ok, so the bit inside the car is connected to the pedal, and then that connects to the top half of the cable? Just wondering if the pedal half is connected to the pedal linkage permanently or not? Also, how exactly does it clip in? As I forgot to remove the cable when removing the engine so would it likely to have just popped out, or broke off with force? Cheers
-
I'm replacing it because it was removed when i changed the engine over, how exactly is it split into two halves though? The end that is exposed has a spring with a ball and black plastic bit on the end of the cable, so basically from the throttle body through to the bulkhead.

Any ideas on fitting it to the pedal easily on a golf vr6? You just cant see nothing under the dash and can barely get my hand up to the top of the pedal link, how am i supposed to get the cable on? Do I fit that end first, or on TB first or not?
-
Ok thats fine, do i need to plug the egr stuff, or just leave it there but disconnected. Would the vr6 that I already took out have a core plug already fitted in place of the SAI port? Cheers
-
Damn, i've just realised it's got what looks lke secondary air injection also at the inlet manifold. Am i going to ha e problems using this engine?

Have just got a replacement engine for my OBD2 motor. The replacement one has differences though like EGR, but the throttle bodies are the same? The replacement one also apparently came out of an R reg golf too. I've basically nearly done the swap, just have to bolt the motor back in and everything, but i'm worried about these differences. I've already changed the alternator/starter loom as that was different. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Rod bearings gone + very possibly more
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Does sound likely, although the head gasket had just gone on thursday, but still that was too quick to burn all its oil like that. I'll wait until I change the engine and then i'll strip it and find out what went wrong. -
Ok, driving along for about 7 - 8 miles and car decided to throw a couple of rod bearings and burnt most if not all of it's oil somehow. I know this from the noise the engine was making and the sudden smoke out the exhaust. This all happened in the space of a minute or two, so i'm thinking something failed. I know my radiator fan has been playing up, but would that have caused this if the fan wasn't running, surely not over such a short distance? I know oil coolers are a common problem on these, but again could it of caused something this bad? I'm not even going to bother stripping the engine

No power, speedo dials weird
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Somehow managed to lose/burn all of its oil within the space of about a minute while driving, knocking like hell, and pretty much seized up. -
No power, speedo dials weird
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
The battery was just flat, but dont worry anymore guys, then engines just gone bang. -
Just gone to my car, was ok last night and theres no power at all, alarm wont work, nothing with ignition or anything. I can get into the car with keys and that so thats fine, but all the speedo dials are in weird positions, The temp gauges is in the red, the fuel gauge is full, and the speedo is at 50mph, why is this? I'm hoping it's just the battery, i'm waiting for jump leads right now, but could something have shorted out? Only the speedo dials is making me think this really.

Car hesitating + throttle angle reading problem
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Yes i've done all of it, the fault keeps reappearing every time. -
My VR6 OBD 2 seems to be hesitating and slightly missing at low revs/part throttle, also backfires when opening the throttle after a certain amount of time, which correct me if i'm wrong sounds like overfuelling and fuel building up in the exhaust. VAG-COM gives me a MAF error code saying 0553 31-00 Open circuit/Short to ground, this was a second hand maf that i replaced, but was told was working, but can i trust the error code to be accurate in pointing out the MAF? Actual values also show the air mass being measured at approx 11 - 12g/s at idle, this seems way too high doesn't it, usually a

Your best bets are to get the car scanned on vag-com, will be a lot easier than just guessing at this stage, could be a number of things, but the diag computer will give you a better idea.
-
Yeah shouldn't be any major problems doing that really mate.
-
Yes theres a little plug connector straight after the air filter towards the throttle body.
-
Sounds like mass airflow sensor mate, I have the same problem at the moment. Try unplugging the sensor and driving without it connected for a bit and seee if it makes a difference. If it's better then thats your problem

VR6 no power, stalling, please help
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Seems to be working a bit better now, not as lumpy, just needed a drive for some reason which is a bit odd. Anyway, it's still a bit hesitant at times but not as bad, shouldn't be too much of a problem, although I was wondering if my throttle body needs realigning as vag-com shows the throttle percentage as 82.5% when the pedal is fully depressed, which is not right, correct? The car is obd2 and I had the battery disconnected, it sometimes idles at 600rpm but smooth. Does it sound like it needs a reset? Thanks for the help guys. -

I've already put a new maf on it, and i've just tried a working camshaft sensor. Any other ideas? -
VR6 no power, stalling, please help
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Ok thanks mate, I originally had the sensor in mind, but because the vag com never came up with it, i left it. Why would it cause other faults to show up then? -
VR6 no power, stalling, please help
Smuggler replied to Smuggler's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
But i dont have a fault code for it? But it does have a maf code? -
The car idles like crap, sometimes cutting out, and it just seems to misfire when driving, sometimes its ok, other times its not. Theres a strong smell of fuel outside, and i've replaced coil pack, leads, plugs, and have put another ar mass sensor on. VAG-COM shows fault code: 0553 - Mass airflow sensor - Short or open circuit intermittent (31-10) This keeps reappearing a few seconds after clearing the code. Any ideas? I'm desperate to get this working, the car will just end up being scrapped if not fixed as it's cost me too much money lately, and i dont really want to do that.
