  1. you can get just as good wuality from other manufactures. A lot is paid for the name as everything is.
  2. mayo usually means its on the way out unfortunately. Have you tried running the engine with the coolant bottle top off...could be an air lock. Give all the pipes a good squeeze as the engine comes up to temp (whilst the lids off)
  3. aww mate dont get me started lol. My Mk2's bottom end went and is still broken! dropped the oil and no schwarf in the oil or filter so thought i could get away with new shells and some ver4y minor scoring on the crank was wet and dried out. Still fookin knocks all be it no where near what it was like. kinda thinking one of the rods is slightly oval or something. New oil pump as that was the cause. Just need the bottom end doing as everything else was ok. Didnt want to have to buy another one as i just done the chains and new piston rings in this one! I may have found a recon engine though for
  4. it wasnt the works, everything bar the chains i think and excluding head work
  5. Re-build is just over the £1k mark IIRC
  6. The early OBD1 cars just have two connectors including the grey one. These then go into the laptop cable. The OBD2 has the 'proper' diagnostic port. Depends which car you have. VW can print off the the full loom layout which will help you with colours and type of connectors. I think OBD1 were 2 pin connectors.
  7. strip and rebuild will be just over a grand, defo the way to go for piece fo mind. failing that, im sure VW do an exchange engine but its well over a grand.
  8. if it gets noisier when its warmer and continues to 'tap' with the engine revs it could be the bottom end going or gone sadly. mine did after i drove it hard for a few miles. you sure the sound coming from the top of the engine and not the bottom?
  9. it sounds like them mate yeah, best thing is to go an get them plgged into a diag machine and see which ones work! shouldnt be too far apart though, see if vw will print you some of those diagrams, their v helpfull, give colours and everything.
  10. ahh ok, thats quite costly for a rebuild mind, suppose its the complete engine however. Im only looking to do the bottom end. VW do a new block with internals for around £800 i think. Second hand engines are going for as little as £200 !! Will investigate a little further me thinks!
  11. if its a clunking sound...similar to a hammer being tapped on the block or manifold, then its going to be bottom end unfortunately. More you drive it, the more damage it will do. Noise will prob get worse as engine gets hotter and the oil thinner. £500+ for that im afraid
  12. in the 92ish MY for the golfs, there was no port, the plugs go directly into the diagnostic machine. Im sure if you have a look around the fusebox, you should be able to find the plugs there. VW can print you off a very numpty friendly wireing diagram, with locations and where they are in the loom etc!! Thats if the parts guys can be assed. But dont think yours will have a port
  13. Ahh a nice set up there! No doubt the Schrick stuff is whats ptting the price up somewhat lol! I have a CDA and supersprint de-cat system on mine. Works well but if were to do it again then id run a two box system as unfortunately its quite 'boomy' in the back. I'll be just going for the std rebuild...any idea on costs there? Just want a reliable engine that can take stick at times, if im honest im not too foot heavy anyway, so most of my spends will be going on cosmetics.
  14. Hi mate, yes want it done right first time round as i dont want this happening again! havent driven it for a month! What tweaks you getting done? You mind me asking how much the rebuild is costing you from Stealth and what your having done? I suppose cost does depend on what needs doing, think my crank will need re-ground and the con rods looking at..somethings slightly oval i think as already changed the pump and bearings with no luck!
