  1. Took my head off last night. It hurts quite a bit now and I can't see where I'm going. No, really, I'm stripping my engine down to fit new gaskets, seals, timing chains and big end shells. I took the head off my VR. It's done about 115k according to the clocks. I noticed that the exhaust valves were covered in a white residue. Does anyone know what this is caused by. Also, one of the exhaust valves was distinctly less white than the others. Is this something to worry about?
  2. Oh, you want it the hard way It's stamped on a flat machined bit on the block at the offside end (pulley end) immediately below where the head meets the block. I'm not sure how easy it is to see in situ as my engine is currently stripped and in the garage. Good luck!! Rich
  3. Just guessing, but it could be a stuck open thermostat. Check your pipes from cold. Start her up, and check the temperature of the plastic pipe that runs across the front of the block (just above the oil filter housing) and check the top radiator hose. If they both warm up together, then you're thermostats stuck open. It should be closed when the engine is cold so that it can warm up quicker by not going through the radiator. As for your fan switch, it's two stage (low/high speed). Stage I comes on at 92-97deg, Stage II comes on at 99-105deg, Stage II drops down to Stage I at 91-98deg and S
  4. Just checked on my Golf engine and it's on the offside of the rocker cover on a white (but dirty) sticker with a large barcode and the word 'Motokennbuchsfaben' then the number, in my case AAA ******, but in your case it should be ABV ****** I think. Rich
  5. Possibly, it's gonna be the wifes car, so it'll be down to her personal choice. I'lll be steering her down the VR6 route anyway. She'll probably think that the Passat looks too old, which is why I was thinking 'bout a Sharan cos they still look pretty recent and you can pick a early VR up for about £3.5k. Still got a bit of work to do convincing her to go for a bigger car though. She's only just got used to the size of her Mk3 GTI after moving from a Polo!
  6. Cheers malcolm. I'm looking for a towcar that the wife can drive to tow my stripped out VR. Thought another VR might do the trick, but I guess not. I would need to get my track car down to 800kg with a 400kg trailer on top, and I can't see that happening somehow. Might have to talk her into a Sharan VR6!! Rich
  7. Hi, Anyone know what the max permissible trailer weight you can tow with a Mk3 Golf VR6. I think it's in the owners manual, but my manual is missing. Rich
  8. Hi m8, Just in the middle of mine at the mo. Here's the detailed DIY thread. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1264409 Here's a thread from here with a link to an EKTA screen print. http://www.vr6oc.com/forum_viewtopic.php?10.48859 Rich
  9. Thanks gents. I think I'll have to get one of those Bentley Manuals. There's one in the classifieds section for £35. Sounds like it might come in useful. Rich
  10. Thanks for the figures acf8181. A mate of a mate is lending me his compression tester tomorrow night. Don't suppose you know what the oil pressure should read? [ Edited Thu Feb 03 2005, 08:39PM ]
  11. My engine is coming out this weekend whilst I'm waiting for my rollcage. The plan is to change the timing chain/adjusters and water pump (leaking) and generally give it a good going over. Someone has advised me to check the compression and oil pressure before taking it out, just in case the internals need any attention. Probably a good idea while it's out and easily accessible. I need to know what compression I should have from a 2.8 AAA engine and what the oil pressure should read at what rpm? Also, can anyone recommend any other procedures whilst it's out. The engine has supposedly done 1
  12. Thanks Pete. I was looking for something a bit more detailed .... !?! What a star that guy is.
  13. Anyone know of any how-tos on doing this job. Was planning on doing it in the next few weeks while I've got my engine out.
  14. I'll let you know if I hear anything back from designa dubs.
  15. Thanks acf8181. I've just mailed designa dubs about the 280mm Brembos. They sound ideal. Hopefully they'll have the kit finished soon. Rich
  16. Was wondering what advice anyone had on Mk3 VR6 Golf brakes. I've just bought a '93 car to use as a track toy !amazed (no road use) and the brakes (discs and pads) need replacing. I don't want to shell out for new standard discs and pads if they're not going to take the punishment on the track. Anyone have any views on how the standard setup performs and whether there are any recommended brake mods. Rich
