Hi all,

what is the standard thermostate operating temp ?

Is it definitely 80deg. C or is it 87deg. C.

I,ve asked the local stealer and they say its 87deg. C.......

what is the part no. for the 80deg. ones .

you very wrong on that one,std. vr6 thermostat is the 80

don´t eventhing about putting in the 87 one you could end up having sever dammage too ure engine.

the uprated ones people put in are 77 degrees or lower than that.

if you dealer says it´s 87 that sits in the vr he´s an idiot tell him that from me,95% off engine´s from vag run the 87 one but not vr´s

80 degrees is standard, and like the man said anything lower is non standard, and anything higher is grande stupido!!!

thanks guys , thats exactly what i thought,it did seem abit high to me when quoted 87deg.

Not sure on the thermostat details but my operating water temp stays dead constant at 90 (right at 12o'clock in the gauge). From reading other posts on here that seems to be the common operating temp for the water/coolant. Therefore I would assume 87 is correct for the factory thermostat to keep the water temp at this temp. However there are 'colder' thermostats made by companies like Neuspeed to keep things cooler in the engine bay which is always a good thing.

i've just re-read David Vizards book on engine tuning....

"Not only does an engine need to have a quick warmup time,but also the temperature at which it operates for maximum economy can be substantially different from that for maximun power.Bascicaally,maximun power temperature is around 70deg,(160f)but for maximun economy,the temperature needs to be around 100deg to 105deg (212f to 220f).

Another fluid temperature that is important to good fuel economy is oil temperature.this,in fact,needs to be hotter than the water,and 110deg to 115deg (230f to 240f) seems to be about the mark......."

I think i'll go for the max power option.

vrs are better with the neuspeed stat in ..if you dont want advise dont ask (as for quoting from a book ...does the book list vr6 engines ? the vr engine design is like no other engine) the neuspeed stat is same as standard stat but open a little earyer to keep peak temps down.....its not like your removing it!

the reading you get is,not direkt with the termostat,so if you have a 87 one it would show more the 90.the oe termostat in a vr is 80 stop confusing people.

in regards to the fuel eco. there is abit off trues too that but the peopel that get that termostat from neuspeed ,also get other things don ie chipping and then that small amount that it would be using more would be adjust away,and an olie temp off 90-95 would be fare better then what you say,the olies today avery good an still work fin at 150degress.the hotter the engine the more bhp you loose,lower the temp in the engine bay 10degrees and you have 1bhp more.
