comparisons between vr6 and 1.8t

Recommended Posts

just chatting with a guy at work i have got a standard vr6 while hes running a mk3 gti that has had £5000 spent on a replacement 1.8t from dubsports.

he pretty much says his 1.8t is better than anything you could do to a vr6 and he goes on about going to santa pod and beating a supercharged vr6 on the quarter mile. im not sure if he is full of it or is the 1.8t that good an engine. hes now on about spending another couple of grand on doing a turbo upgrade etc and reckons hes going to end up with an engine pushing 400bhp. this just seems a really high ammount of horsepower for such a small engine. has anyone else come across these sort of power figures from an 1.8t and is it as he claims a better option than a vr6?

400hp from a 1.8T is easily achievable but if he thinks he can get that by spending a couple of grand then he's sadly mistaken.

I've been in a 360hp 1.8T Corrado (John Malik's at Stealth) and it's crazy fast. It pulls a 4 second dead to 60 at Santa pod running Toyo cut slicks.

A Stage 2 Charged VR is good for about 5 secs to 60 but the extra legs of the 6 cylinder will have the edge on the 1.8T. If you don't spec the turbo properly on the 1.8T, the engine will absorb all the boost at high revs and the Charged VR will sail off into the distance.

If he's just plonked a standard TT BAM engine in, it won't touch a Stage 2 Charged VR. If he chips it to 270/280 horse (which seems the norm for that engine) he might stand a chance. If he goes IHI or Garrett then yeah, he'll beat a charged VR.....but that is until the Charger on the VR is uprated to Stage 4 :-)

The only thing seperating the two is money mate.

End of the day its a 1.8!!!! turbo and stuff will make it faster' date=' but you are limited. In my humble opinion there is no substitute for CC`s. If you start with 2800 you are already miles ahead of 1800!

Too right! What would happen if you put a turbo on the vr 500+ bhp goodbye 1.8t!

I'm assuming his 1.8t must already have some tuning to beat a supercharged vr. I agree with above though...why waste money ...start of with a fast car already. He must have money to burn ...who would buy a mk3 gti and then spend £5k on it and then plan on spending a further £2k... £7k!! (Plus the cost of the gti in the first place, probably around £2k). So for ~£9k I'm sure you could buy and turbo a vr6 and get some nice big v6 power.

Damm right. You can get 500bhp out of a turbo vr quite safley for around £2500. While it is possible to get that power and more out of a 1.8T it will cost ALOT more.

tbh, a 1/4 mile is no real comparison to what some cars will or wont do. if you run a 500bhp 4wd nos'd monster then a lot of cars will fall under its wheels on a drag strip. afaic, a charged vr is not about a 1/4 mile race as its really only just getting going at the end of it. a 1.8t has a fair amount of low down torque as standard, and is easily tuneable to 250 with little outlay and knowledge. any more means more money and to achieve over 300 and keep it reliable on a day to day basis makes it more expensive still. having just bought a leon cupra i can say its a little jem for easily obtainable power and even with the standard 180bhp it will see off a lot of quicker "on paper" cars due to its close 6 speed box and the low down torque. it does not, however, have the same thrill and noise as the vr, but i reckon it would hold its own with all but a good tuned vr, and maybe even a lesser powered stage one charged vr. i will be giving both cars a side by side test very soon to compare!
