andy 0
Hi, Have just put my new front struts on the car and all seems well except one thing. The 'stop' as the manual calls it that sits on the top of the strut above the suspension turret is standing about 5mm above the turret. I really don't remember if there was a gap there before but am not sure it can be right. I'm talking about the bit that looks like an inverted top hat with a rubber ring round it. I imagine that now the whole strut will be free to drop or at least move arorund in the turret when there is no weight on it. Please please please could somebody have a look and see if they have a gap or can anyone tell me if this is correct, its supposed to be going in for allignment tomorrow but I need to know its right first. I have new VW top mounts on and all nuts are torqued as specced. Cheers peeps.

DundeeDub 0
did you take the old rubbers off the old struts?
gusto 0
Mine did this and I complained in a very arrogant manner only to be told to go and look at my colour concept as it will be the same!! I had to eat humble pie and say sorry when i called back. Both my VR and cocept have a gap but the VRs is much larger. This is totally normal and nothing to worry about
DundeeDub 0
i understand what your on about now.pop the bonnet and get someone to turn the wheel and you will see them move a bit (well mine did anyway) i'm guessing they sit up to allow this
VRmonster 1
this is normal on most cars with mcphearson struts, they have to have some play in them or they would eat through mounts due to the friction from the struts moving when the wheel is turned, or weight being transferred to the side. andy 0
thankyou one and all, will put it back together in the morning and go and have it alligned, have driven it about 300 miles to work this week alligned by eye, more than I wanted but all seems well, just want it set up properly so I can drive it without fear of wearing out the tyres prematurely coz the camber is out. Never noticed a gap before but will go with it if you guys reckon its ok. Will update you tomorrow.
