BMC induction kit - who runs it with or without the cold air feed?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just getting a BMC fitted at Stealth amongst other things, to my golf vr6, and they mentioned it doesn't really make any difference whether the cold air feed is attached or not. How many of you here have a BMC and have run it with and also without the cold air feed... did you notice any difference in driving performance at all?

How many of you here run it without the cold air feed... how is the performance compared to standard? Is it noisier without the cold air feed?

If it does make a difference I will get Stealth to move my carbon cannister in the morning to make space for the cold air feed. Also can the standard cold air feed that comes with the BMC kit reach down to the bottom of the engine bay so the end of it sits just behind the front bumper grill at the bottom? Or is it too short/inflexible for this?

Thanks

Matt

it's noisier without the cold air feed , but to be honest if you want noise get a K & N filter, the BMC have got a decent heat shield but aren't very loud at all IMO, the cold air feed is provided so i would say is of benefit, as fresh cold air into the engine rather than hot air from inside the engine is of benefit, The CAI is enough to get cold air from behind the bumper some even put it into a hole in the bumper grill, mine just hangs down but has a wheel arch protector it sits in to stop it sucking in leaves etc, but defo move or remove the carbon cannister to give the space needed ;)

Cheers mate. Anyone here running a BMC without the cold air feed? How does your car feel compared to standard? Stealth said on a rolling road it made no difference to power output whether a cold air feed was fitted or not. He said where it is situated there is a big gap between at the side of the head light.

How quicker job is it to get Stealth to move my carbon cannister?

Cheers

Getting it fitted for free at Stealth as having a load of other stuff done at same time :) Otherwise I def would fit it myself.. done it before on other cars. Had a K&N cone on my old xr2i and that was quite noisy all the time.

Did you notice any slow performance in stationery traffic with your bmc without the cold air feed fitted?

hi matt, i dont have a cold air feed running to the bmc, this is my second bmc on two different VR6's and to be honest when the cold air feed is left out it sounds much more GRUNTY!!! i had a K&N before putting in the BMC and it roars much more. as soon as you put the cold air feed on securely the noise mellows down and you can only hear it over 4000 revs.

so... iv left mine out and used the standard cold air feed from wing mouthed into the bmc loosely - it dont drive any slower in traffic etc and is just brilliant!!

just my xperience.. hope it helps. a pic to follow any second now

Cheers mate... yeah all comments help thanks. I think I may leave the cold air feed off.. if there's hardly any difference with and without, especially if the rr figures at Stealth seem to say there is hardly any diff.

I'm getting my car back tomorrow. It needed a remap due to a small amount of pinking remaining, which probably reduced my power to keep things safe... but from what Vince told me on the phone with all my mods and now the new BMC and remap it is making 192bhp and around 195ft/lbs torque.

My bhp hasn't gone up (which I suspect is due to the remap keeping things safe) but my torque is much higher than it used to be... I think it used to be around 183ft/lbs... should be an interesting drive home tomorrow. Getting my gf to see if she can hear me as I rev past her on the motorway!

Cheers guys for your help.

mine is fitted without the cold air feed.

i changed from a ram air to this and it seems realy quiet i miss the noise so much i might but a K&N to cheer me up how much is a K&N??

ur car made 195 lb/ft trq pretty high what is the vr as standard????

my car made 194 bhp and 183 lb/ft trq with the exhaust high flow cat and ram air and getting her redone next month on the same rollers but will have a de-cat the 6-2-1 and my BMC fitted hopefull see 200!!

it is bound to work better with the cold air feed as cold air combusts better. Nos is a cooling gas which gives optimum burn in ur cyclinders this is because the combustion is used more as power than heat therefore greater efficiancy!

Yeah my car was around the 195bhp mark with 183lbs/ft torque. My car was running lean and still had pinking so vince at Stealth recommended the rechip/remap to combat that and as a result the bhp was lowered slightly. However the torque is quite a bit above average for a lightly modded vr as the remap gave a nice high torque output.. mainly down to the 6 branch and complete exhaust system plus bmc... got the final figures.. it has 192bhp and 193 lbs/ft torque. It pulls like a train now.

Vince at stealth said the gains with the cold air feed fitted are marginal if any at all. The rolling road tests prove there's very little difference. I may get round to fitting the cold air feed at some point but to be honest I love the noise without the feed on... it howls like an F1 car when you floor it above 3-4k revs... and is quiet when you want it to be when you just drive normally. I'm sure with the cold air feed on the noise would be muffled a tiny bit.

Ciaran good luck with your mods mate.. The ram air should sound nice!

I may be getting some Shrick 268's fitted soon... however need to get some second hand ideally to keep the costs down. Then I should have nice power.. ideally around the 205-210bhp mark :)

I would have thought that it would suffer without the cold air feed. Not in this weather perhaps but definitly during the hotter months. On a rolling road the car isn't moving so no forced induction as such (the cooling fan used with the RR isn't the same as with the open road)So how could you really tell?

and mine so get it up ya :P

any racing car example F1 WRC touring cars all have large cold air feeds and on a 5 million F1 car id imagine it's for a good reason!!!

agree the gains may be small but worth it in my eyes
