VRVIRGIN 0
I've had it since i bought the car, i have quite a bit of play in the steering and on uneven roads at high speeds, it's becoming quite silly. I find when overtaking the car shifts pretty abruptly to which ever direction i point it at ( . I had this in my E30 and it was the linkage between the 2 rods (one rod connecting directly to the steering wheel) that was worn. Would you think the same principle applies to the Golf? How can i go about checking this on the MK3? The Audi Comps are due to go on the car in the next month, so kinda want it rectified before they do. Any ideas, pointers greatly appreciated guys n gals. Cheers Nel.
VR6Pete 1,455
I had that problem, turned out to be my rack!
VRVIRGIN 0
Was hoping it wouldn't be m8. How much roughly Pete? The car needs to go for a Tech Inspection before being able to register it and am a bit worried they'll pick up on it.
VR6Pete 1,455
cant remember now tbh mate, it was so long about, perhaps take it into a garage to see if it's something not as severe?
kilokilla 0
Firstly if you mean a vic check mate then all they check is the chassis numbers and engine numbers match what they have recorded, your m.o.t should cover the rack but you should need m.o.t before v.i.c check unless you already have a current m.o.t in which case you dont need to worry about rack for vic secondly i have a complete second hand rack i have just removed from a 1995 vr i can sell you for £40. VRVIRGIN 0
I think it may be a bent tie rod or summin. I've just noticed the near side wheel sits a little further back in the arch than normal, the offside one is positioned as it should, central in the arch. I'm i right in thinking this?BTW, thanks for the offer Kilokilla, but would end up costing more than it's worth in shipping it over m8, thanks all the same.
kilokilla 0
no probs mate try checking your wishbone is ok if its had a knock to wheel it can bend this and this will cause wheel to sit back in arch or if bushes are knackered it can also cause it to sit back a bit
VRVIRGIN 0
Will do pal, thanx for the info, your a star m8.
just2zang 0
With the cost of the tie rod ends being so cheap id change both sides, both wishbone bushes and if still no joy, do the rack as well. £40 for a 2nd hand rack is a bargain btw.

VRVIRGIN 0
Unfortunately, shipping isn't as well priced as Kilokillas offer otherwise i would definately have it. Once i get the opportunity, i'll be checking all mentioned. Cheers lads.
