antera309 3
There are two connectors - one is the plug on the back of the airbag itself, the other is a blue multiplug behind the dash.
kilokilla 0
I like to disconnect battery before disconnecting air bag just in case (dont want it going off in face )then just unplug the connector directly from back of airbag.it will pull off by hand.
Matt W 4
Remove the cowling around the steering wheel column (two screws), you'll see the connector for the airbag wire.

Matt W 4
No that will brake your slip ring for the airbag and then you'll end up having a airbag light. Here is how i did it when i had to replace the slipring for the airbag.- Disconnect the Battery for safety taking note of any radio security code and the like and wait for at least 10mins for the system to discharge. (Some say you can work straight away on the airbag system but better safe than sorry when the airbag goes off in your face)!- Move the steering wheel until it locks in place (with the keys out of the ignition).- Use a allen key not sure of the size its either 6 or 7mm to remove the bolts at the back of the steering wheel that hold the airbag in place.- Slowly pull the airbag unit forward and use a small flat bladed screw driver to remove the connector.- Then remove the cowling around the steering column, two phillips screws.- Use a 24mm socket to remove the nut that holds the steering wheel in place.- Disconnect the slip ring connector that was hidden in the cowling- Remove steering wheel remembering the position, it is possible to mark the wheel and spline with a dap of paint or something similar so its easier to align when putting the steering wheel back on!Make sure that you move the slip ring slowly in one direction until it clicks and locks into place. You will not have to move it far in one direction so try both directions! It needs to lock in place to avoid damage to the slip ring as the mechanism is like a clock spring so it needs to maintain its central position to avoid damage to the unit. Then you can remove the three torx screws holding the slip ring in place on the steering wheel. As they say to refit is a reversal of the above. Remember to torque the steering wheel nut to the correct torque when refitting and the same for the two allen key nuts that hold the airbag in place (normally VW recommend replacing them but i was told by the local garage its not really necessary).Hope that helps! SankysVR6 1
which screws are you talking about? as i don't remember seeing these when i changed my steering wheel. and the airbag light has not stayed on my car.
Matt W 4
The 3 torx screws you refered to removing from the wheel, they hold the slip ring on the wheel. It is best to remove the slip ring intact with the wheel and then once the wheel is off remove the three torx screws only if the slip ring has to be replaced! At no time do the torx screws really need to be removed, just the screws that hold the steering wheel cowling on, the two bolts that hold the airbag in place and the 24mm nut that holds the steering wheel on the spline! kil2002 1
thx m8 great bit of info, is the slip ring at the back of the steering wheel with the steering lock? because i had a problem with this as it was not on properly and my horn kept on going off.thx
Matt W 4
yes the slip ring is on the back of the wheel, its that small piece of plastic between the actual leather wheel and the plastic cowling on the steering column. The steering lock is independant to the lock on the slip ring.Hope that helps to clarify things!
kil2002 1
Many thx m8 you made it very clear
cwinter8 0
guys, I have removed and refitted my standard steering wheel, as described by 20JahreGTI. It's all gone back together fine, but the airbag light remains on. Am I right in thinking the slip ring connector is the white/yellow one below the steering wheel? I disconnected that and the yellow connector that goes into the back of the airbag. Any ideas?
