after getting a little attention for the noisy engine at a local cruise tonight, i ended up blowing up my gearbox at 20mph. tut. i have no idea what ive done. but heres the description.

pulling away in first at average speed, clutch in, change to second. didnt take any effort to go in, but then the car jumps and makes a very loud gear crunching noise, as though not using the clutch. at first i thaught mu clutch had gone, but as i was on a roundabout continued to drive for a sec to give myself space. found it wasnt the clutch but there was gearbox oil all over the place. i had to drive the car home in 3rd. gears change fine just a little gritty beacause of the lack of oil, but on deceleration the box makes rattling/grinding noises as though theres shards of something in there.

any suggestions as to the damage, and im thinking it may be easier to get a 6 spd rather than a standard box if it needs replacing. as its gonna be a hell of a labour cost to replace the box. so would you recomend uprating clutch/flywheel or anything else while im on it? need ideas fast but any help is appreciated

sounds like a seal or somethin may have broken, if not the casing has got damaged, have you had a look for holes?

for a 6 speed you'd need to supply them with your existing case...so if its damaged , you'll have to get anothe box from somewhere.

what was the steering like? did it feel heavy? reason i say that is its common for the diff to let go and take the 'box with it.

there is a '93 vr6 at a breakers somewhere (contact details are on a thread titled 'i've joined justins club' or similar), but they wanted £60 for the set of clocks, so they may well ask loads for the box.

so whats the explination for all the oil pissing out everywhere? lol. i took the housing cover off today, and had a river of oil filled with shards of steel flood my arm, ha ha. i think theres detrimental damage. got a gearbox guy comin to check it out tomorrow, if he says any more than £500 to repair, im going for a 6 speed and quaife. ill keep the 2nd hand ones in mind.

if you go for a second hand 'box, which is the most sensible thing to do (unless you're minted of course), i've heard that changin the final drive to a lower one has a very good effect on accelaration. i don't think it'll be that expensive either, so its a good cheap mod. you need to speak to phatvr6, he knows more.
