Justicevr6 0
I am going to change all my wheel bearings , disc's and pads as well as the outer front CV joints this week hopefuly Wednesday, is there any problems that could arise that would hold up getting it finished in a day. I have no specialist tools just a big club hammer and chissel but I do know my way around a car.Any pre known pos problem would be helpful.
Nerih 0
removing pads requires a caliper compression tool, available at any good automotive store.
purple highline monster 0
or some big maul grips!! only things that are gonna be a pain in the arse is getting all the bolts undone, hub nut is a real pain in the arse sometimes!
Justicevr6 0
I normaly slacken the bleed nipple & use a big screwdriver between the pad and disc and lever them back.and the hub nut I have a 2ft 1/2" breaker bar.
alanf 0
You will need a 7mm allen key to remove the calipers, clamp the flexy hoses and as you say release the bleed nipple to allow the piston to be retracted DONT back flush the fluid through the ABS valve block! it could be costly! you will most likely need to top up the brake fluid afterwards and bleed the brakes to be sure! the fluid ressy is tucked up on the fire wall, drivers side behind the intake hose to the throttle body &| not easy to get at! remove the scuttle tray, 3 bolts and slide it out, unclip the air filter houseing, unplug the MAF and lift the hose to one side, may be a couple of plugs and hoses that also need to be removed/unplugged? you should now see the master cylinder and fluid ressy? top up as need and stick it all back together !shy have fun and be sure you have the correct size disc's and pads! there are two sizes! Justicevr6 0
Cheers for the info so far guys.alanf, there are 3 types of front pads I know becouse I have all 3 sets lol 4 including the rear, I did'nt know what I have on the car at the moment so best thought better get them all, so will have 2 sets for sale soon
alanf 0
As far as I'm aware there are two sizes of disc's on the Sharan/Galaxy/Alhambra! pre 2000, 268mm post 2000, 288mm the increase in size was due to the higher BHP of the 24V VR6 engine being fitted and the odd higher output TDI lump the size increase also allowed the fitment of larger rims 16/17'' as standard
Justicevr6 0
I am sure I have the smaller disc's as it is a P plate so yes two sizes of those but there are also 2 types of wear indicators and 1 without so 3 pads,if I were to change to the bigger size disc's would I have to change the calipers as well or are they the same ?, as the dis'cs do not come until Wednesday morning so I have time to change my mind but no good if they won't fit. !grr
alanf 0
You would need, new calipers, caliper mounts, the disc's and pads and possibly new flexy lines? if you want better brakes go for a set of 4 pots and big disc's! IIRC
dubloke 4
dont forget the rear calipers on all vw's wind in, its noas simple as just squeezing them in as you'll fubar them! also you may prob need the reluctor rings for the back discs that sends the signal to the abs sensor when the cars moving! these are spring fit and usually when removed go back on very loose creating havoc with the abs ecu! not sure if your sharan is the same set-up as a golf tho, cant imaging its much different! Justicevr6 0
Thought I better err on the side of caution and brought a Hayens book for the Galaxy as ther are the same as a Sharan.
alanf 0
Thought I better err on the side of caution and brought a Hayens book for the Galaxy as ther are the same as a Sharan. then get down the Ford dealers and buy your parts from them only thing the haynes doesnt cover is the engine apparently they never sold enough VR6 versions to justify it being in the book :? for the engine get a TIS or a Russek pocket manual , or just pester people on here !lol
Justicevr6 0
I got the Peter Russek book very basic I thought,as for going to fords they could not come anywhere close to the prices I paid for all the stuff I am doing admitidley they are QH parts or First line but the saving on main stealers is masive.
