Hi I am a newbie to this forum and only found it by typing in my questions on Google,if anyone could help it would be great.

I brought a VR6 Sharan last week from Derbyshire and drove it back to Bristol, whilst doing 70-75mph it was fine when I took it upto a steady 120 the temp gauge went to 3/4 I slowed down and the temp dropped to 1/2 way, I got home and the car smelt hot but all coolent levels were fine, anyway I went to Brean today and got stuck in traffic the temp gauge went over 3/4 and the fan cut in and the oil temp read 120c,I have had a look through past messages but could only find a topic on earlyer opening thermostats as I feel that could be my problem I would get one(unless anyone else has any idea's.

My next questions are

!. where is the thermostat on a Sharan

2. what is the normal position for the water gauge (it is in segments not C's

3. what is the norm for oil temp

Any help on my problems would be great as Haynes do not do a workshop man for the Sharan ~:(

Cheers

Ian (Bristol)

The thermostat is inside a plastic housing below and just forward of the coil pack, attached to the front of the engine. The housing has 2 or 3 sensors plugged into it.

Water and oil temperature should both be below 110 degrees C in normal driving on an average temperature day.

It might be worth draining your coolant and putting some fresh stuff in to see if that helps. Use G12 coolant with distilled water - 50/50 mix.

Thanks for your tips,I checked the oil level today and it was oin the bottom of the dipstick so I put a litre in I am hoping that the right amount of oil should help with the cooling, time will tell as I am off out in a mo.

Getting back to the thermostat and it's location,if I am standing in front of the car looking at the engine what side is it on,is it top middle or bottom of the engine ,is it in a hose or in a housing on the engine,I may be blind but I have looked and can not see where the dam thing is.

I have just brought a book on E bay for a tenner inc the P&P on the vr6 engine thanks to this forum I knew what to type in the search engine. THANKS GUYS. !amazed

When looking at the engine, whilst standing in front of it, it on the right hand side of the block towards the bottom at the front. It has three round sections, each containing a sensor. has a couple of pipes going to it.... Good to know where it is as these do start to leak when they get old. Hope that helps.

But as mention it might be worth doing a coolent flush and oil change first, just to make sure this is fresh before you start tinkiering with the 'stats...

Hi ,Just thought I'd share this as it might help others.

I was jet washing the car yesterday and decided to put the jest wash on the oil cooler and the amount of dirt and crap that was in it was amazing it now runs much cooler, where as before it was 110/120 oil temp it is now a steady 99.
