shail 0
I had mu OSR wheel bearing done about 8 months/ 10k miles ago. Its started to make noises again. I'm going to get it changed tommorow (at another place), but in the mean time i'm going to call the garage who originally did it, but need some tech help so i dont sound like a total idiot.Question is : is there a way to temporarily 'fix' a noisy bearing, if there is what is it? Also how long should a bearing last and is there anything else which could make a bearing prematurely wear out.Ta.
stu h 0
there is a way of tightening the bearings up.when i bought my car - there was a rumble coming from one of the rear wheels. not long before I bought the car it had had new discs, pads and bearings on the back.my mechanic justs whipped off the wheel, took the little domed cap off, tightened something up and said it hadn't been done-up fully. new split pin, put it back together and it was fine.probably not much help as its not terribly technical lol
jayvwvr6 0
i had gsf rear bearings done and one didnt even last 20 miles,it broke siezed itself to the rear hub shaft and had to be chiezeld of!cost me alot of money so id recomend you buy vw bearings the wheel bearings from main dealer are only
MSV83 0
on my old motor i changed all the bearings but the front went within a yeah....gsf....may be better to get vw 1's.
andy 0
Every premature (ie 20 mile) failing of a rear bearing I've heard of has been cause by overtightening. Its not common knowledge that these bearings are not tightened beyond hand tight. People tighten them up and even torque them sometimes and wonder why they overheat and seize. VW ones will do that just the same as GSF ones!
dubloke 4
please dont think that you can just do the hub nut up by hand and leave it tho peeps! andy is right with the hand tight bit, but you need to seat the hub/bearings onto the stub axle first and then back the nut off, then retighten by hand using a 24mm socket, not forgetting the castle cap and split pin! otherwise it will destroy itself quicker than over tightening it! wheel bearing failure is not good tbh, as all those that saw me at inters this year will have realised by now! purple highline monster 0
i had some chopper tell me both my rear wheel bearings were gone when i had a tyre swap done, just aswell i had a little knowledge as the rear bearings are tapered where an amount of "play" is acceptable to have in them, if your changing them get vw ones they are better quality. if your rear discs are needing doing soon? do em at the same time or it will cost you twice! shail 0
Cheers for the replies. Just had it done, mech reckoned it looked like a defective bearing, and not to do wth the other garages fitting.
