pappers 50
Did the front panel with rad and twin fans change at all through model years? Any electrical connector differences between OBDs? I can't find this info. There's a VR being broken very near to me (I already had a couple of parts off it) at good value but its OBD1 and no engine or history, so box, ECU and loom are out. I want to grab parts that are universal to OBD1 & 2, leaving myself a low miler OBD2 engine, loom, ECU and VR box to find either independently or together. I'm at: engine brackets, hydro clutch, front panel...anything else that could help? Sorry for double post. Cheers.
dom.joy 87
The electrical connector changed from square to oval I believe. Also not sure if all vr6's had 3 stage fans but my 97 OBD2 does pappers
pappers 50
Thanks Dom. Looks like fan control unit and motor also different, so may not be 3 speed as you suggest. This is fun.
dom.joy 87
Yeah I'd imagine the whole cooling/fan wiring might be different from a 2 stage to 3 stage car.
c00k 435
3 speeds is for cars with air con OBD2. 2 speed is for non air con OBD2.3 speed fans also have and extra sensors on thermostat. Edited March 30, 2015 by c00k pappers

pappers 50
Ta. I'm OBD2 non aircon and will stay that way post conversion. The N reg OBD1 donor has aircon so would be 3 stage, with older connection. I'm guessing this'll be no good to me at all then or....?
dom.joy 87
Think it'll be 3 stage even though its early if it has air con

pappers 50
Thats a good site there thanks. Interesting reading.I picked up the slam panel with rad and fans as its so close. Here are the fan motor and rad sender connector images below. From the info on the site above it appears to be a later unit? The rad temp sender is 3 pins in a triangle. I searched images for fan motor to see if the other connector is the same - I can only see ones that look like mine below. Its from an N reg car so possibly built through the OBD change over period. Looking for confirmation of early or late. If its late I guess I could grab the control unit to go with it. Thanks. Radiator temp sender Fan motor
pappers 50
Edit. As you said earlier Dom I think it may be early not late as the white loom connector is squarer not oval. Edited March 31, 2015 by pappers
bennyk 1,238
If it's any help this is the front panel from the n reg obd2 I'm breaking? pappers
pappers 50
Thanks bennyk those connectors are the same as mine. Edited April 1, 2015 by pappers
dom.joy 87
Yeah thats early mate.My late one has four pins, one earth then 3 pins for different speeds I believe
pappers 50
Yeah thought so. Seems that early and late units aren't the same as OBD1 and OBD2 here if bennys is OBD2 and is the same connections as the one I have, which is early. The car I got mine from has A/C so should be 3 speed as per the vr cooling guide google doc, but only has 3 terminals which suggests earth and 2 speeds. Hmmmm. Benny is yours aircon/3 spd? dom.joy 87
Maybe not then. I was looking for a new panel as my connector was snapped, but everything I looked at had the 3 pin plug so I repaired mine and gave up. haha
pappers 50
I believe the 2 speed will be ok as I won't have ac anyway and the doc guide states that if the 3rd fan speed engages there is deeper trouble.
dom.joy 87
I believe the 2 speed will be ok as I won't have ac anyway and the doc guide states that if the 3rd fan speed engages there is deeper trouble. Yeah two speed will be fine. the 2nd speed is like a hurricane i dread to think what stage 3 is like pappers
pappers 50
Just to end this topic, the white 3 pin square connector is for 2 speed Non air con. It doesnt mean OBD1 as my 98 has the same connector and is also non aircon. The donor car I got the rad from also has NO aircon, I got that bit wrong..oops. So whilst I cannot confirm that early / late have different connectors, on initial evidence I would say not. The difference is around 2 spd or 3 spd, so a/c or non a/c.
