N959 KGH Purchased an ex owners club VR6

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I have just purchased my first VR6. I have owned numerous mk3 gti's in the past but could never find a vr6 in good condition and at a sensible price.

I purchased one yesterday and found a VR6 owners club welcome letter in the service book. The car was from London originally (Roehampton) but I purchased it in Leicester.

I was wondering whether the car was known to anyone or if the previous owner could share some details. Seems to be a good runner but needs some work. Exhaust is blowing and theres a burning oil smell in the cabin.

On it's way to a local VW specialist in Birmingham as we speak.

Thanks guys - Car has been somewhat of a nightmare so far.

Took it the garage and on the way, I noticed water firing out of the front of the car (When I mean firing I mean firing. It probably flew 3/4 metres in front of the car).

Pulled over, and it seemed to be coming from the top of the radiator.

I have a burning smell in the cabin - I am pretty sure this is due to oil leaking from the bodged up repair job done on the breather valve. The valve has been removed. The end connecting to the piping has a screw inserted into it to block it, and the end coming out of the engine block has what looks like a mini air filter. This is soaked in oil and dripping down onto the manifold.

There is also a really strange noise on start up coming from the brakes. Its not steering related (I dont think) but its an intermittent grinding (when no pressure is applied to the brakes) that lasts about 4 seconds, 3/4 times and then stops. If you try and press the brakes whilst the noise is heard they are very hard and grind.

I feel like a bit of an idiot for buying a motor that has so many issues, but its a genuinely beautiful car. It needs some TLC so I will spend whats needed to get it up and running again and keep it as a weekend drive.

Any help/tips to keep the cost down would be great. I am based in Birmingham, so if you know any local garages/enthusiasts let me know.

I'm going to as much of the work as I can myself and will post pics/guides on here so that it comes in handy for someone else.

No idea how to post pics - I'm not familiar with photo bucket, but will get some pics up when I can.

mini air filter would be the PCV valve, see here

radiator or the expansion tank? if its tank it may need new pressure cap

and the grinding sound no idea! i had a play with vagcom and did an ABS pump prime, that sounded like thumping around the front wheels.

have you a code reader? if you have an old laptop you can download the free version and get the cable from ebay for about £10.

good luck

Thanks Steve.

I found a replacement PCV valve so will fit that sometime this week.

I will post a picture of where the leak is coming from - but pretty sure its the radiator. The spray of water fires out the front between the grill.

Might be a silly question, but why does it need to be an old laptop?

I think I am going to take it down to the garage that does my MOTs and ask them to give it a once over. I have read in other places that it could be bearing related. No harm in getting it checked over to eliminate it being dangerous.

I wish I knew more about cars - im learning with every google search. This will be quite some achievement if I manage to get this beauty back to her glorious self.
