VR6Rich 3
I know Warren had a clonking problem on his syncro which he thinks is to do with the rack now.
VR6Pete 1,455
I had a clunking noise, it was probably to do with my wisbone bushes being split, had em replaced, now is fine.could be CV joints though?
Eat this 2
were 80% sure its either track rod ends or ball joint the problem is theres no obvious play anyway its rock solid
badboyV6 4
Ok, just to let you know..... I have a knocking that appears to only happen when i go slowly and turn on an uneven surface... its quite loud and you can feel it through the pedals, i was convinced it was suspension however the local VW garage checked the suspension and nothing seems to be wrong- there is no play in my steering either- Ive had a good listen and it seems to be either one of 2 things- Eitther its the lower CV joint on the steering rack- about 150 quid, or it could be the adjustment needs tightening on the rack as ive just found out from the Bentley manual, as it desribes you will hear a knocking (which i do) Im going to try this first and if not its the joint... Get some one to move the rack from side to side with the engine off and have a listen where the rack meets the pinion....

badboyV6 4
Yeah mines gradually got a little worse- its feeling a little vague around the straight ahead but movement in the wheels is perfect) Yours may not be that but its definitely worth a shot mate. Have you got the bentley manual?
Eat this 2
no i dont have the maual
badboyV6 4
ah bugger- it shows you how to correct the play if theres a knocking coming frm inside th car- exactly like mine... there is like a diamond shapedmetal plate with three bolts in it- the mddle one being the adjuster... See if the noise is coming from there first - if it is pm me and ill write out what it says in the manual......
Eat this 2
been on a ramp today there is NO play anywhere we even had a gentle go with a crow bar NOTHING is loose but he did mention the wishbone bushes r beggining to give up probably 98% left il see how it goes over a few weeks see if it gets worse
