Info PLease - Looking to Buy a VR6

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum, in fact just registered last night!

I have spent the last 3 years over on Honda Revolutions as I had a Prelude 2.2 VTEC but I am looking to get a VR6 to replace it.

I have found one which has FVWSH, 64K, mint but was declared SORN in April and I think has sat for around 4 weeks not being used - the guy who owns it also has an E43 AMG Merc, 968 Cabriolet, 911 Cabriolet and a Lotus Elan so the Golf is not really required!

My query is when I checked under the oil cap there was a slight milky residue but nothing major - we had driven for around 15 minutes at a mix of motorway and a-roads.

Is this a problem? or would you maybe expect a certain amount of condensation build up on a car that has sat for a few weeks?

On the drive, the oil temp went up to 94 degrees - is this normal as well?

There was also a weird noise coming from around the airbox area, kinda like a slight throbbing noise??

I did check the bits I have gleaned from posts on here - the rear doors have had the reinforced plates welded in to fix the rust around the hinge. The guy has had the car resprayed when he bought it (photo evidence) as it had a few parking dings, etc. but not crashed.

He also has 2 sets of BBS alloys, one set have been refurbed and are pretty mint.

The car had a new sump fitted in Feb due to the oil one spotting his driveway. The sunroof and all electrics work apart from the n/s/r elec window which he says is a chaffed wire which ties in with what I have read on here.

The heated seats work too.

The fuel comp was reading 24mpg - is this around the average I should expect? I was hoping for slightly higher, but c'est la vie - it's not a shopping trolley after all!

Last thing, he is asking

With the milky residue and the engine temp getting to94 c in fifteen minutes, for me would point towards the head gasket been gone. It could just be due to short journeys though. Price seems a bit high too, compare on auto trader site or parkers guide.; )

after a short journey like that its not unusual to see mayo on the filler cap. if you are unsure go back and take it for a longer drive. if the sller knows you are genuine then he shouldn't mind.

not sure about the price - as peter said -find similar cars on autotrader.

as for the oil temp -it sounds ok if you'd been up to motorway speeds.

best of luck mate

Going to see another one later on.

The following link shows the 2 cars, bottom one was this morning, middle one is the next one!

**killed the link as it's messing up the page justification**

This one has no leather but has aircon which the first one didn't.

3 door looks better imo but 5 door is useful for my wee girl.

Decisions, decisions !lol

P.S. Thanks for the help guys!

Just bought the 3 door !amazed

1997 R, 71K, FVWSH, all electrics work. Feels much 'tighter' than the 5-door, more instant throttle response, better pickup, new discs/pads on the front, pads rear, exhaust, etc. Does need 2 front tyres - any recommendations? and a wheel refurb but well happy!

Pick her up on Tuesday.

Looks like i'll be hanging around here then! :P
