Big End Bearings failed twice :(

Recommended Posts

Nightmare situation. My car (Corrado 2.9 ABV) is currently with a specialist having cams and a Vortech fitted. Today for the second time whilst being run on the Dyno it has damaged the big end bearing. Same cylinder as last time.

After the first failure they removed the engine from the car. Fitted a new crankshaft (2nd hand reconditioned) and fitted new bearings.

This is getting too costly now and I really can't have the same thing happen again. Any ideas or pointers on what could be causing these failures. Should I just source another engine? This one has already been bored out and had Wossner pistons fitted.

so my basic questions off the bat are this.. If things were reground were the correct oversize aspects re-fitted... (Plus x thousands etc). During the install was the process followed correctly? Pre&post-oil and torque figures used. With the same cylinder is the oil flow correct to that area? Block flow somewhere..

The bearings basically fail becasue of friction or force. So not enough oil or too tight vs. what is causing the impact? I assume you did shaft bearings and did little end bearing when shaft and pistons were replaced.. and you are confident everything is straight on that particular piston...because there is only one item in there that hasnt been mentioned as changed...I assume you only did the piston piece itself sooooo.... how were your con rods?

Hope it helps..

I'm confident the specialist, Stealth Racing, know what they're doing. The car has a bit of history. Shortly after I bought it the big end bearings went. I had the engine rebuilt here in Germany. There was wear in the cylinder bores so I had them bored out and oversized Wossner pistons fitted. Supplied by Stealth. They also supplied Wossner Conrods but these were not fitted at the time as the German place couldn't get them to fit. They needed machined down a little. At the same time, the timing chains/tensioners were replaced along with oil and water pumps.

I drove the car for 18 months until I'd saved up the cash to have Shrick Cams and a Vortech V3 fitted.

Dropped the car into Stealth a few months ago and told them to take their time. A bunch of other minor jobs needed doing too. On the first run post Schrick and Charger fitment it made 274bhp. But almost immediately spun a bearing. I sourced a 2nd hand crankshaft here in Germany and sent it to Stealth. And they removed the engine and rebuilt it. This time using the Wossner conrods the German place couldn't fit. Then I got an e-mail from Vince today telling me the same thing had happened again. First dyno run car made good power. Then started rattling from the bottom-end. Even he's baffled. And to be honest I'm starting to think I should just give up. This is turning into a serious drain on my finances. Appreciate any advice the Forum can offer.

I can vouch for stealth racing' date=' vince knows what he's doing. Did you get the engine hot tanked when you had it bored out and machined?

I've every confidence in Vince. To be honest I've little idea of what the German place did. I know what parts they used, most of which were purchased via Stealth and Vince gave advice throughout the build. However they are a proper workshop specialising in engine/gearbox rebuilds and they prepare the engines for the Toyota racing team. So they should have known what they were doing.

Vince had a good look over the engine and didn't find anything untoward. But I really can't afford to have it fixed up again only for the same failure to occur. I just want to drive my fast new Corrado!

Nevermind. I won the auction. £83 was a bargain. But thanks very much for the offer. And thanks for the advice so far lads. Keeping these cars on the road is an obsession verging on madness sometimes.

Hear Hear! no worries mate, glad you got one sorted fairly reasonably..
