Zonda_ 0
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else was having the same problem. I'm now on my second VR6 and have had exactly the same problem with the Thermotronic system on both. The system will put out cold air or max temp hot air and nothing in between. This is a lot more irritating than it sounds! Either you freeze or you drive around with the sunroof open to vent the hot air. (you look a right prick with the sunroof open and it pissing down!)Anyway, what happens is I get a loud buzzing/vibrating sound from that weird vert thingy next to your stereo. I took the cover off the new car today and saw it was full of dust, I couldn't get it out without removing most of the dash and as I din't really know what it was I thought it best to leave it. Then I hit on the idea of an air jet to clear it. Fortunately my dad had an air spray for cleaning his camera stuff. A few blasts with that and the heating sytem gives me a full spread of air now WHo'd have though it would be something so simple, I still don't know what the vent thingy is and there are no pictures in the manual to say.Hope this helps someone else. binliner 0
that little thingy is the temp sensor for the climatronic hence why it being dirty causes problems but handy to know
Zonda_ 0
But my cars don't have the Climatronic, it's Thermotronic on them.
binliner 0
whats thermotronic? the standard air con?
Zonda_ 0
I think it's the first version, it's not aircon and I don't know what the difference is to Climatronic apart from the name. My car's are 92 and 94 so pretty early.
binliner 0
but it has a digital display as opposed to dials?
Zonda_ 0
No it has the three dials. Looking at the manual I think what they did is when they introduced the digital version they called that Climatronic and the 3 dialed version Thermotronic. Not sure if this is right though. trackman 0
If I remember correctly there are four types of heater systems. Normal as fitted to all standard golfs has temperature control, but no feedback system. So it can't maintain a constant temp in the cabin.Thermotronic is analogue (knobs) temperature control for non-aircon systems. You set the cabin temp on the dial and with the feedback system, it will moderate the output heat to maintain requested temp.Standard Air-con is just like normal except that you have an air-con button to enable the power of the air-con compressor. With no feedback system, you still have to manually control the temp in the cabin.Climatronic is digitally controlled air-con. You set the cabin temp on the digital interface and then it automatically controls both fan speed and temp output to give the desired cabin temp.Rich
DundeeDub 0
I have got thermotronic on mine, don't know if its the standard on vr's but i have suffered from the above problem, i've also always wondered what that thing was next to the head unit was, now i know, mine is also full of dust, Also the fan speed dial used to only work on number 4, the face of the dial has had heat damage so i'm guessing its something to do with that, recently it has started to work again on all 4, strange. Got a full system spare though inc fan etc and all piping so will get round to shifting it over someday[ Edited Wed Apr 06 2005, 09:43PM ]
stu h 0
I've only ever seen 'thermotronic' on vento's. Never seen it on a golf. I know someone who is breaking a vento with it one if anyone needs parts??
malcolm 0
I have a standard 1994 VR6 which has Thermotronic
