Guest v6fred
The 2.8VR6 is smooth as silk the rest of the rev range, but between 1600 and 2000rpm it makes a *bit* of a "graunchy" / "growly" noise...goes right away below or above this.Doesn't seem to run badly then (so maybe not a misfire)...almost sounds a little like it's pinking (but that would be a lower revs)From a search these sound like possibilities (for a misfire mainly):1. Coil Packs2. HT leads3. Spark Plugs4. Fuel Filter5. Fuel injector cleaner6. Air mass sensorOther things I might try:Worth flushing and changing oil ??Or use Optimax ??!Any other ideas / any1 had this ??!Thx!
badboyV6 4
Does it sound like its missing? Or is it more of a metallic noise?
Guest v6fred
Does it sound like its missing? Or is it more of a metallic noise?Thx for the reply..but not sure wot u mean by missing ?It's just not as smooth as the rest of the time, and makes a slightly grating (metallic I guess) type of noise.Could get it on the VW diags I guess. badboyV6 4
Missing = misfiring. If its misfiring then its more than likely ignition related - plugs/ leads /coilpack. The metallic noise could be anything- a loose heat shield (nice and cheap!) Mine does a similar thing and i know its the hydraulic lifters- but thats cos mine need replacing- VR6Rich can vouch for that - he loves slagging off my car ;-) How loud the noise? Guest v6fred
You would have to be listening for it, it's not v loud. My folks didn't notice it (no stereo on !).How can u tell if the hydraulic lifters need doing ?The chaps at the local garage reckoned top end...weren't sure what tho'....may try VW / specialist locally for another opinion.[ Edited Fri Mar 25 2005, 07:36PM ]
Guest v6fred
Something else....it doesn't always make the noise. I used it all day yesterday and didn't notice it.

Fuel injector cleaner6. Air mass sensoryep, could well be one of these....or maybe even dirty/damaged impulse (hall) sender.i'd start by checking the leads and coilpack...do this by spraying water over them (with engine running) at night and looking for sparks. also check the leads are pushed on properly (but you'd see sparks most likely anyway)not a bad idea to change the fuel filter anyway, isn't pricey.if you haven't cured it by then plug in diagnostics and see what it says. Seademon 0
I found out why my car has a misfire on sat - I was removing my carbon canistor and had the engine idling and could hear an electrical click and once I found out where it was coming from - I could see a spark jumping to the head fom the top of the metal part of the lead and this was causing the car to miss - the leads were only fitted at the beginning of December when I got it serviced so guess what - its going back!Thats something you can listen out for - would be easier to see in the dark though It seems to be worse when the cars hot[ Edited Mon Apr 11 2005, 09:26AM ]
FishWick 21
That shouldn't happen with the original VW leads but can with a aftermarket ones, as I found out too. I had to fork out for the red ones from the dealer. I managed to bash them down to £90....no way I'm paying £120, although the they are way better quality than any of the aftermarket ones. The OE Berus just seem to last longer and take the heat better.... my idle has been on the nail ever since and that infamous 1500-2000rpm thing has reduced drastically.
