Eat this 2
get a garage to have a lok m8 but vrs r a little bit noisy/rattly when cold
badboyV6 4
Whats the mileage- the tappets are a common failure on all VW Golf mk2's & mk3's. Mines quite rattly from cold- but when warm its fine. Ive used a thicker 15w 40 oil to quieten them down until i get them replaced (they are on order :-))
acf8181 0
all vr6's rattle from cold...it just depends on how bad it is, if it clears within a few secs i wouldn't worry too much. thing to consider is if the timing chains are getting worn (whats your mileage? and have they already been done?) stevietots1 0
mileage is pretty low.. (i think) only 74000 the chains aint been done as far as i know but its not them thats the noise is coming from its the general engine, what oil is best for these cars coz ill do an oil change this weekend coz they probably put some shit oil in when they serviced it just b4 i bought it ~
badboyV6 4
It definitaly sounds like the tappets (hydraulic lifters) mate. Put your ear to the top end and you can hear them rattling away. Mine does exactly the same thing. (And mines got 69k on the clock) The only way of quietening them down is by using a thicker oil- and mines nearly silent now. Im getting mine replaced soon as i want it to sound silky smooth again- even from start up! If it was the chains that were worn you would hear them whether hot or cold.... stu h 0
theses engines do seem to be rattly from cold starts - it's probably nowt to worry about.the general concensus (sp?) is to use synta silver oil. its the stuff VW use. u can get it from gsf or the dealers themselves. and bear in mind when my oil was changed it needed more than a 5 litre bottle's worth to fill then engine up
silverline 0
i asked my garage about oil in the vr and the book for recommended lubricants they show me said 15w 40 so thats what i use now. you could try putting some engine flush in, take it for a drive then change the oil? could be something as simple as that. VR6Pete 1,455
tell the garage to use synta silver, VW and stealth racing recommened! Dont for anything less...

VRVIRGIN 0
Would hydraulic lifters/tappets be a complicated/expensive job to do on the VR. Mine deffinately need doing now. Been told by VW not to bother as theres no harm, but feel a bit uncomfortable with it sounding like my old mans Pug. Using 10W40 oil as well. Any ideas?
