EcksJay 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Report Share Posted March 14, 2004 Hello.I just had a quick idea, and wonder if it was feasable (and possibly even done before).How easily would a VR6 engine go in a mk3 golf estate? its currently a 1.9 TDI, but i just wondered if this sort of conversion was actually possible, and if so, what would be involved.Call me crazy, but its just an idea. acf8181 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Report Share Posted March 14, 2004 if you really wnated an estate for whatever reason, i suppose it makes sense. people have put vr6's into cabriolets.if it were me i'd get a complete doner car, then take every part out the vr6 doner car and transfer it stright to the estate. Look at Dubsport's cars and some of the stuff people are doing on the Continent.I've seen the VR6 egine dropped into Cabrios and every other model of golf, but never estates. Come to think of it, I've never seen a Mk3 estate with so much as a set of alloys fitted.I say go for it! With some choice bodystyling you would have a really unique motor. With some decent engine mods, you might even get a magazine feature on it.Get hold of cheap, tatty 5-door VR6 for £2000-ish and basically transfer everything over. This would probably work out cheaper than buying the bits individually and you'll end up with a better result, 'cos you'll be able to fit all the ancilliary VR6 stuff like the 'leccy windows, 'leccy sunroof, ABS etc from the donor car as well as the engine.The disadvantage of using a diesel model as a base is that you will need to replace the entire fuel system (tank, pump, fuel lines, fuel filter). EcksJay 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2004 cheers guys, that was pretty much the encouragment i was needing.I've been looking at the idea of purchasing an entire donor car, and if it was possible to get one for around that sort've money, then transfering everything over, then i would seriously think about it.It would be rather fun anyway, nice set of black aerospeed wheels on there, and that would basically be it.I do like to be a bit different, so this sort've thing isnt unusual for me.Cheers for the help. EcksJay 0 Posted March 14, 2004 Author Report Share Posted March 14, 2004 Yes indeed i noticed that one also.I'd imagine finding one like that, with either body damage or other non-engine damage would be the best idea.Seeing as the cheaper ones will most likely have high'ish mileage, i presume a rebuild etc would be worth doing whilst the engine is out, before it goes in the new vehicle...?This is merely an idea for the future, but i'm trying to find out as much as i can now, so it gives me some things to think about.As in, getting hold of the estate, just driving it whilst i save/prepare for the conversion and maybe performing subtle visual mods to it, and/or wait for a decent donor car, then once i discover someone to carry out the conversion.....going for it.Would be unique anyway. Guest LucyLu Posted April 19, 2004 Report Share Posted April 19, 2004 in relation to the swap me and a mate done it to a 16v mk3gti it took us a full weekend in a proper workshop and was fairly simple, but the gti had the correct pedal box so it meant the dash could stay put. a fairly mammoth task for the TDi estate cos the tank,suspension,brakes etc will prob have to be changed.would be hilarious if u go ahead and do it tho. just try to get a complete donor car. happy days.
