seems too good to be true(turboing a vr6)

Recommended Posts

As I'm sure everyone will tell you. as it has been covered sooooo many times before... There's a reason my Garrett turbo was £1400 and you can get the whole kit there for half that.

Universal, cheap, nasty chinese parts.. google 'chinese turbo fail' and have a look at some pictures!

I have a chinese gt35r copy if you want one brand new for 150 quid.. i only used it to mark up my manifolds and downpipe for welding them up, didn't fancy dropping the real deal by accident! Have a look at some chinese turbo pics and then decide ;)

Just a turbo on its own..

Have a look through Jim Potters build thread, then you'll see how much work is involved ;)

Don't forget you have to sort out things like lower compression, injectors, intercooler, pipework, exhaust, manifolds, downpipe, fueling, remap... The list goes on and on.

seen these mate on ebay i was looking at getting one but been told cos they are from usa there a nitemare cos they are suited to left hand drive vr6s dont know how it makes a difference but been told it does!!

Left hand drive cars are orientated differently under the bonnet and so lots of work to modify to fit right hand drive application.

Yep.. without a doubt.. low boost is just a bolt on thing.. can even run it with no intercooler etc, Obviously you should change injectors to be safe, and have it professionally remapped.

Unless you are mechanically minded, and can use a welder, and have all the equipment for any issues or eventualities, I would be very careful starting a turbo project by yourself.

change there nasty turbo for a T28 turbo from a skyline and it's a winner.

simple as that really. don't be put off by people saying you need a garrett gt35rsdghsyeodns 223 ;)

it's complete bull, i know 3/4 guys now running turbo'd vr's with skyline turbos and seeing 270 - 300bhp and even using skyline injectors.

future.

a skyline turbo is to small..

the fact it runs and can be done dont mean its right .

if your insistent on low boost go with a t3 based turbo , all are good for 300bhp , lower a/r's mean earlier boost, larger ones start later but hold longer .

pm me if you want any help ..

just being kind.. a supercharger minus ecu is around 1600 quid secondhand.. turbo conversions can be done for the same.. then add on 300-400 for a mapped ecu.. factor in a 25-40% increase in insurance ( anyone who tells you diff is lying ) then you need min of better pads circa £70-90 .. i could list more .

my point is this, on the other thread you said you dont want to spend 350-400 quid on shocks and springs.. well lets just say , yes you can do a turbo conversion for around a 1000 pound, but it aint just t he conversion cost it everything else that you wont have thought of until after you start running it. it can get very expensive very quickly. to do it all properly your looking at a conservative 4k turbo and maybe 3k supercharged .. this assumes you start with a good base car with no exsisting engine faults ..

lots of people start these but never finish , hence the half done kits you can buy . make sure you A: want to keep the car for a long period and B: can afford the bills it will bring.

all said and done a vr6 turbo is a joy to drive , supercharged ones are equally as entertaining .

this is my opinion, and as people will tell you , i no NOTHING

Oh yes the bills will always be slightly higher when you introduce forced induction to a normally aspirated car.

But the fun is in driving them properly.

I have to agree with Jim on this. It is not just the actual turbo or supercharger install, you have to uprate suspension, brakes, exhaust etc to make a safe relaible car.

When i put a rotrex on my old VR6 I had already put bigger brakes on, uprated ARBs, SS exhaust and Koni coilies so my car was ready for it.

But after I put it on I then had to change the fuel pump to an uprated one as well....then you really need gauges to check on what s happening in the engine plus boost gauges to check you have no leaks and its pulling right.

The list can get very long....but IS worth it.

Also its impossible saying that "i'll stay on low boost as that will be fine"......boost IS addictive, i went from a 8psi rotrex'd VR6 to a 1bar R32 turbo to feed my needs, and that is getting mundane now lol

thanks guys, i used to have a renault 5 gt turbo back in the day and went down the power route, it made very nice power on the rollers but on the road it was laggy as hell and it was running on standard 13inch wheels so the handling was a bit over the edge lol! so i do know you got to improve the car all round

i was just getting a rough idea of the numbers required thats all, and here is a pic of my old r5!
