Daverse 175
Hi guys, doing a gasket change on the vr, and theres the usual sooty crap and a few lumps of oily residue. I've heard of so many ways of cleaning the faces of the head and block, from razzor blades and acetal to rough side of a sponge.. so what is the best way? let me know, cheers davr
oldmandon 1
SEMTEX........... gets pretty much anything off. Don't use a chisel or a screw driver, you will score the face. paper scrapers are good as they are wider than the face. I think there is a gasket remover spray, though I have never used it, I just use a scrapper and wire wool afterwards.
bungy 2
Carefull removal and then either wire wool or scotchbrite for the final clean.
Daverse 175
alrite thanks for the advice guys, will try making a start friday. Is getting it skimmed at a machining place any good? I've heard that removes the thermal barrier that vw put on the faces, although it removes every last imperfection.. any thoughts?
oldmandon 1
Need to be careful when skimming, you can unwittingly increase the compression of the engine, unless this is what you want to do. Also if you go too far, the valves may hit the top of the pistons, but this is a worse case scenario......
Daverse 175
I was thinking of about 0.1-2mm, just to take all the dirt and fraction of metal off, leaving it like new I wouldn't have imagined it wouldnt make the increase of compression negligable? spadam 7
I had my head skimed on my old mk3 vr6 when changing the headgasket. As long as they only take a minimal amount off you will be fine.
legvw 0
Only need to take a thou or so off the face if it's not warped.
