bentert 0
Morning all, long time member none time poster.... lol. Right how-dos. I'm Tony, predominatly a early VW owner, i've currently got a 1972 1302s Beetle, a Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet and up until recently a 1999 VW Polo Open Air which was my daily. HOWEVER the poor Open Air finally gave up the ghost, a combination of a very low car and big speed bumps mixed in with a big bang on a pot hole reduced the radiator to pieces and leading said Open Air to overheat and cook itself..... Thankfully my brother loaned me his 1991 Polo G40, a car which truely scares the crap out of me, however I am getting used to the speed of a fast car again...... ANYHOWLast night I noticed the chap up the road with a 1996 P Plate VR6 Highline has put his car up for sale. So I went round and had a drive. It's a nice car all the usual refinements e/w e/s/r p/s a/c electric seats and mirrors all which seem to work, plus the purple leather seats. Its got a few minor rust patches on the arches, which I thought was odd seeing as its meant to be galvanised, but it didn't bother me to much. Its got all SAMCO hoses, lowered on Blistein shocks and springs (I think), AUDI R8 alloys, with the originals available, HID lights, recent new exhaust, all the panels are straight, all the stickers on the slam panel and boot, he had to spend a fair amount on the car last MOT to get the emmissions right. Now chain noises whilst I was out drive and it had plenty of power, and felt nice, on the 10 minute drive on the bypass it was giving 35MPG, and I was being mean with it, Its got 3 1/2 months MOT but no taxHOWEVERand there is always a however, its done a fuck ton of miles. 164k with no mentions of the chain tensioners being done. Now my brain is screaming DON'T TOUCH IT! BUT and here is the clincher.... £600 buys it..... Advice please. I've never had a VR6 and promised myself that one day I would. How difficult is the chain tensioners to do, I am a mechanical novice, I can change exhausts and some engine work, but I've heard these are a cunt to do. OR how much does it cost to get a garage to do them? I've heard the parts are expensive and its an eight hour job!?!?I was thinking I could buy drive it around for a bit, MOT it, and drive it some more until it breaks and then pass it on. Advice please.
