legvw 0
I've heard that auto boxes aren't that reliable, maybe for this reason. It maybe a design fault which i'm not sure you could over-come.
rsweeney 40
its such a shame after the trouble i went to with transport etc and the money i spent. he said it was tested twice whilst on the car as it wasnt a right off and it worked fine including going up inclines. what do i do ? I was pretty lucky to find one with the same code wasnt i ?
legvw 0
Does it leak oil through what looks like the crack? If not then use it, what have you got too loose?
rsweeney 40
im doing the timing chains atm so havent tested it but the old one didnt it just leaked between engine and gearbox. and yeah thats a good way to look at it i suppose
b road blaster 0
can you not get a weld run along the crack to "beef" it up a bit
bungy 2
That is amazing really as both cracks line up and are even crooked in the same places.

rsweeney 40
b road blaster can you not get a weld run along the crack to "beef" it up a bit im not sure ,wouldnt heat be an issue for internal components? UnitedMotorsport Posted: Both are from crash damaged cars. how can you tell? i know that the original gearbox was involved in a small crash were someone went side on into the passengers front wing but i dont know about the replacement gearbox
b road blaster 0
well it looks like your first box has had some done on it allready i really can't see it being a prob if it was done in small sections so it did'nt get cooked in one go gotta be worth asking some pro welders
rsweeney 40
found this in the gearbox sump - (the new gearbox i bought ) they are very thin not sure what they are please help ? could it be a gasket or what is it? and yeah for the crack it might be worth getting a pro welder to have a look if what i found in sump isnt too serious
b road blaster 0
ok not sure but look like some bits of the clutch bands to me
bungy 2
Not sure about the debris you've found, is it metallic and is it very hard or soft?Personally I woulddn't use it with the crack and debris. Both look like they've suffered impact damage which has stressed them along the same weak point.
rsweeney 40
its not metalic, its relativly hard but brittle fibre material about 1mm thick and breaks under pressure of a pencil point. what should i do as a new casing is £600 and the parts inside might need replacing. the gearbox is very rare though and cant be referbed as its cracked
bungy 2
The best method for any weld repair s to use the same sort of material and in this cercumstance you have a spare gearbox to cut up for use. TIG welding along a "V" notched into the crack with the other gearbox material should sort it but I don't know what the debris is.
rsweeney 40
ok im not an experienced welder so might have to get a professional to do it and cut up one gearbox ,untill i know what the debris is a cant make a start because i dont know which box to use. first box has a crack and was getting stuck in one gear after a few hours, id turn it off then on and it would be ok for 10 mins then happen again. second box has debris and a crack... b road blaster 0
if its not metal then i would say it is the clutch bands broken up so the box would need a rebuild i know a place in portsmouth the does them but not over in guernsey
rsweeney 40
ahh not good, what are the clutch bands ?
b road blaster 0
they are what it says on the tin lol lol when the box changes gear they work the same as a manual clutch would, they disengage and reingage the gears as you need them

b road blaster 0
well tbh i really can't see why you could'nt do it as you have 2 box's so you could use one for refrance as you done the second one ......but i for one would not be brave enough to do it lol lol lol
rsweeney 40
yeah, if i tested this one incase its not one of the clutch bands will i do any damage? i do have a long parts list before the car can go back together though
