which o2m is the one to have?

Recommended Posts

well ive eaten yet another mk3 gearbox on my n/a VR 3rd one now.

so im looking at putting a o2m in. or maybe a V5 box. just looking into prices first.

which o2m is the one to go for? car will be running 16s, front wheel drive, and N/A for now, might change later on. I want a lower final drive but still drivable if i got FI

parts list

O2m gearbox

gear selector and cables

C2 o2m gearbox mount

C2 blanking plate

drive flange (02M 409 356 A)

24V flywheel????

24v clutch????

and custom drive shafts

do i need mk4 v6 starter motor?

feels exspensive, like really exspensive lol

am i right in thinking that the prop is always spinning on the 4 motion? the drive is turned on and off at the rear diff? so there would be no harm in leaving the transer box on, would save a few hunded pounds

Yep, the rear diff engages drive to the rear wheels.

Yep you need the 24v starter. Different bolt spacing.

I think you also need the 24v thermostat housing and one or two of the associated hoses.

And driveshaft alterations!

Defo not cheap, but not expensive compared to a gearset!

Isn't the V5 box an 02J variant?

Just avoid MK5 02Qs as they have no speedo worm gear.

what have they changed on the mk5 box? it would be nice but thats just to much money

is it the v6 4 motion box i want or the R32 is there any more desiable gearbox codes?

the V5 box sounds good. but its 5 speed. yeah think its got the 02J gear set or somthing. alot more bolt in i think as it from the same VR6 engine. only need to change drive shaft cups, gear cables/ selector and starter motor. shifts better and lower ratio FD. all for about £300

recon i can do the o2m for about £750ish

kev any idea where i can get a good lightweight steel 24v flywheel? idealy without spending to much

thanks for you help :)

DRP 4 motion v6 box is the one to get 2000-2001. apparnly there stronger

just brought one for £290 :D

Correct!. Beefier gears than the mk4 R32 box that I have.

You should get a 24V termostat housing. Or else you can have issues with space.

You will love your 02M. The gear change is shorter, tigher and smooter than 02A/02J.

And yes, the VR5 has 02J.

thanks for the help both of you

Ive ended up with the box, shifter, cables, starter, both front drive shafts, both front hubs all for £450 :) feels like a good price.

so all i need now is flywheel and clutch, thermostate, 2 new front wheel bearing and that should be pritty much it

maidan VR6 what flywheel / Clutch have you used? Im not keen on using the duel mass one. but ive read this

"CAUTION ALL 02M Owners: Do not use a lightened flywheel on the 02M, the stock clutch and flywheel is tuned for the 02M, for weight distribution, and a light flywheel goodwill pickup harmonics from the main shaft. It sounds like the trans is about to self destruct."

im not sure how much truth is in this but is scared me off a lightend flywheel. Ive found single mass sheel billet flywheels weighting 16 pounds.. is that light weight?

ill probaly just use a standard clutch for now as its only N/A

I'm using a helix clutch an flywheel.

The gearbox is 'rattly' when idling and out of gear, but i've never worried about it.

Seeing as though your going to put the gearbox on, you might as well put a none dual mass flywheel in as these are prone to failing.

does that mean the cars not on the road or have you done some crazy norwegien dsg conversion.

BODGE as for driveshafts i used golf mk4 tdi driveshafts. the passenger side is a direct fit and the drivers one i shortend by 20mm although when fitting i found it could have maybe done with another 5 mm so ide shorten it by 25mm if i were you.

When you shorten a driveshaft' date=' is it just one of the ends trimmed and resplined, or do you have to cut it in half, shorten it and reweld it?

[/quote']

The driveshaft thats shortened has a hollow center, so cutting in the center of this, turn up a tight pin for the inside, press together then weld.

ah if only you had said sooner. ive got the 4 motion driveshafts now. have you kept the transer box when you did yours?

what clutch and flywheel have you used and where from?

nearly had a heart attack.. Its like £600 for a single mass flywheel and clutch. well cheepest i can find so far. might end up using 2nd hand clutch and dual mass flywheel for now

found a metal lathe i can use at one of my mates dads work

lol the information stitting here infront of me and i just don't clock. going to look into the helix... appartly they do a full weight single mass flywheel which isn't ment to rattle. Is yours a light weight one paul?

EDIT... FUCKME £800 for the helix clutch. £600 for one from USA

Blew my clutch at 25 psi 5th gear. 4 puck red Clutchnet.. Pulled like nothing ive ever driven, then bang ! Maybe only the disk.

got it back home :) along with the rest of the bits.. seems alright, drive shaft cups are harder to spin than the 02a but i guess thats because of the transer box.. this unit feels about twice the weight of the vr box proper heavy.

Dude that I brought it off had binned all the bolts which is a bit cock but ill just get them from VW. Theres no oil in there, should be alright but id have prefered it be stored with oil

the boss from helix is trying to sort me out with a different clutch set up with go with the flywheel as im only running N/A VR.. to try and cut some of the cost down... Its a shame no one makes a 220mm clutch plate with the 02m box spline in it so you can use standard VR flywheel

this doesn't feel right :S

Photo0486.jpg

had to put in on a old block as I shat myself thinking it was off a 4 pot lol

Photo0489.jpg

does a bracket normaly go here? or am i just randomly missing bolts.. dodgy

sorry for all the questions but the speed senser is missing (hope it hasn't been snapped off and is inside) is it just a plug and play into the mk3 loom. Do need to replace it with mk4 item or mk3?

There is a bracket that goes from the transfer box to the back of the block. I haven't used one on mine.

I've given the wiring for the speed sensor somewhere in my thread mate.

Bolts wise, i used most of the bolts from the vr gearbox, then the others were random vw bolts i had lying around.

Cool, good to know. Cheers mate.
