keep the advertisement for the car , which says that it has fsh, think you need to assess how much the history means to you and judge the car on its merits the big factor is whether you are going to keep it for a while selling it on will be significantly easier with a history but do you intend to take it to a garage to keep it up which will be more expensive.

I rang up VW helpline as mine had no history but only 3 owners and 65k on the clock- VW confirmed when and where it was servived and also other bits that had been done. If i was you i would ask for some kind of discount if he cant find the service record- even if its a just a few hundred (to put towards tuning it!)

If the guy who owned it said it had service history ask him which garage it was serviced at as it may not neccassarily be a VW dealership it went to. Then you can contact that garage and see if they have had a record of it being looked after there :-)

My Vr came with a stamped Service history book but no receipts so i contacted the VW dealership in Luton and they printed off everything it had had done there and they kindly posted it all to me no problems at all.

If you don't get anywhere with the service history search your gonna have to go on a gut feeling about the car or take a Mechanical buddy with you. Only other thing you can do really is get the AA or RAC to do one of the 100 point checks on it.

But at the end of the day a cars a car its bound to go wrong its just about being a bit lucky with them really :-).

Hope it all goes well :-)

agreed, knock the guy down on the price if he cant provide the history - and (sorry i dont have the helpline number) but ring vw, i bought mine with no history cos i did a bit of investigating and found out that it had almost full vw history. there was a dealer sticker in the car, i called them and they reeled off the services it had, even from a different dealership.

check the number plaster for a vw dealers details, or the back windows for a sticker.

hope this helps.

Sorry bud i cant find the number :( I will try to find it tonight though) Even if the cars been serviced elsewhere it shouldve had the 1st 3 years with VW so as not to invalidate its warranty- Ring your local VW dealer and ask for the VW service helpline. Give them your reg when you call and theyll tell you which garage to call. Ringing the garage will also give you further info (it did with me)

Call any VW around where your buying it from. From experience it doesn't matter which VW it was serviced at, as once you give htem the registration number they can call up all the history. This is exactly what I did, even though I had checked the FSH, just wanted peace of mind really. Get calling...

ok just got in touch with vw and when i told em the reg it didnt bring up anything!! i started to woryy but after i told her the chassis number she confirmed what it was and told me it had a private plate on it at some point (phew) ok on thier system its showing it has 3 services carried out by them in 98 2000 and 2002. and the milege on the car ties in with what they have their system so thats looking ok, now i just need to find out whos serviced it from 2002 but all isnt as bad as i had thought :)

I was just away to say that the reg is not the best option due to private plates etc, mine was on a private plate originally so it didn't show up either but the vin code did and showed it to have been on a private plate when bought. Its good to go to vw and check thses things out
