[moved] GOLF GTI 16V VS GOLF MK3 VR6

Recommended Posts

VR6 brotherhood,

I was on the net a few days and came across a rather interesting video clip on you tube, from the car show fifth gear. Tiff Needell takes a standard oak green 16v around the track and then sends the car to TSI for a 1.9 16v engine rebuilt. To cut a long story short TSR claims the new engine made an extra 45 bhp and rated the engine at 185bhp. So Tiff takes the car out with the new engine and posts a time 3 seconds faster than the original standard engine.

So this got me thinking could a well sorted mk2 16V take on a standard or even mildy modified (Exhaust, Chip, Induction kit etc). Having owned a Mk2 GTI 8v and a MK3 16V I never actually had the chance to drive a MK2 16V.

So for me it comes down to which would win, a lightweight high revving peaky engine, vs VR6 Torquey muscle.

My bet would be the VR6 because 80 of whatver torque thats available at the top end of the rev range on 4 cylinder would be available much earlier in the VR6. So more torque over more of the rev range would win it for me....

What are your thoughts lads- has anyone on this forum ever owned a GTI 16V MK2.....

Thoughts please...

I have a MKII 16v with a 2.0L ABF engine in it. It pushes out over 170BHP.

My VR is modded (see sig) so maybe not the comparison that you are looking for but the VR is in a different league & my 16v feels slow when I get back into it after driving the VR. The 16v does seem more chuckable though!

vr all the way, i love the 16v and the way the engine goes but compared to a vr it feel's weedy,

mk2 16v = lightweight over sized go-kart, vr6 = big fat lazy yawns of power. but lighten the vr engine and it'll get just as revvy as a 16v, even a well cared for standard engine should still bounce around the rev counter very quickly
