Service time - recommendations please

ok so although my Rado was allegedly serviced only 2months ago, after the mess of just about everything else this guys garage did to the car i want to do it again for my peace of mind.

oil wise from what i have read a lot of you guys seem to use synta silver 10w40, but i have also been advised by a few people to use 5w40, what would be the benefits/downfalls of using this oil?

which spark plugs do people recommend? normally i use bosch super 4's in my cars, but anyone have any they specifically recommend?

am i ok with BERU leads from gsf? i have always used gsf's beru oe leads in past, just wondered if VR was different.

oil and fuel filters will just be standard GSF items unless anyone has reason for them not to be!

appreciate any/all input guys, want to service her before i put her on the rolling road next weekend :)

I would use 10w40 rather than 5w40 and synta silver is as good as any. Using too thin an oil will not give the protection you need balanced with the clearances inside the engine. Initial signs will be a noisy engine on startup and may even leak where it didn't before. I wouldn't use Bosch plugs and prefer NGK's. I prefer to use TPS or VW for service items. Portsmouth TPS give a further discount on production of your owners club card and Southampton VW give 10% with your card so well worth Premium membership.

spark plug leads - best are dubpower - 2 year warrenty and they prettty good for standard plugs 45 quid delivered...i ordered a set last month and i can feel the difference.....

plugs ngk as bungy said agree with the oil..synta is the best , get it on ebay

gsf are good but shop around to get some good prices...

lol ok so NGK plugs, dubpower oe 7mm leads, still a bit concerned about oil.... from what i can find, synta silver is a synthetic blend, ie semi synth? is that right? opie oils lists 5w40 fully synth for vr6, bit im fine with using a 10w40, but would have to be fully synth as im starting to get higher oil temps and she's sounding bit tappy.... someone clarify for me please?

I'm not sure what part on Opie oils you read for that as it clearly lists 10w40 semi synthetic for a VR6 http://www.opieoils.co.uk/products-for-my-vehicle.aspx?product=car-engine-oils&make=vw#results

it does list 5w30 fully synthetic for the 4motion which is one line above.

im guessing your selscting golf vr6 mate? cos if you go for service pack on corrado vr6 it lists 5w40 fully synth...

i dont think i want to put semi synth in it, book lists 5w40 fully snyth, and iirc fully synth is much better for engines running high temps?

think ill have to go for millers 10w40 fully synth? anyone used this stuff?

I'd use semi synth oil, i do in mine, but i can't remember wether its 5/30 or 10/40, so not much help really!

Ngk plugs all the way, standard leads will be fine, filters are fine what ever make really, and use quality gearbox oil if you change it.

Might be an idea to change all the coolant/fluid too.

i used millers oils in my PD VAG cars and it was brilliant stuff, but i switched to synta as its as good as any and dead cheap.

I think half the problem with thinner oils being specified for the VR6 is VWs specification method, where any oil of a higher number than the spec you require is acceptable as it "meets or exeeds" but putting 5w30 in a VR6 it will drink it in no time its far too thin

all done now ( well kinda)!

massive thanks to paul for all his help, was getting properly stressed by end of the day. still have a massive oil leak thanks to the prev idiot fubarring the oil filter housing, but have a new one coming tomo, so lob that on, refill, and job done :)
