Hey guys my search for answers has brought me here so I hope I need look no further. I have a 1997 VR6 mk3 golf which i've owned for about a year. I recently (3 months ago) had the plugs and leads changed due to a missfiring issue which sempt to clear the problem untill yesterday. Yesterday morning I came to start the car to be met with it just turning over. I stopped and then tried again and it fired up but was running very lumpy as though it was running on just 4 cylinders. I reved the car and at higher revs it was alot smoother but as soon as I came off the throttle very lummpy again. I decided to run the car straight to the garage for a computer check on the ecu but on the way once the car had warmed up the lumpyness dissapeared and all sempt fine. We put the computer on to check the error codes anyway but it returned no fault. The chap said it could have been a lttle moisture build up and to see if it did the same thing this morning well it did which is now why i'm on here as we still have no error codes on the ecu and I have no idea what could be causing this, the car is fine once it has warmed up and I cannot make it do the same thing, but I know its going to be the exact same again tomorrow morning.

Thank you in advance for any theories as to whats causing this.

on an obd1 car id say its probably the isv which is located to the right of the throttle body just under the engine plastic... That could do with some cleaning as that's what stabilises the revs...

If not, try running the car without the maf n see how it runs, also check the plugs and leads.

Failing that it could be the lambda sensor, but should really show up on vag com... So id start at the top and work the way down the list.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :) :)

Plugs and leads are brand new, I have checked the coil pack and it looks in good condition although I have not removed it, where abouts do they crack? I changed the MAF late last year with OE part too so cant be that. I've heard of problems with Crank sensors on these, would this give me a similar fault?

So as expected I got the same thing again this morning so I've ordered a new cam sensor and a temp sensor as i've been told they can cause issues as well. Only £69 for both sensors from VW so worth changing just for piece of mind.

Anyone got a pic of the two sensors in situe that they can put up?

haha. Good man. :)

Go to the membership tab up the top, then go to the bit that says downloads, then technical documents, then you will see in there is a guide to cleaning the cam sensor, you can download it from there, just click the blue arrow at the bottom of the page. :)

Im on my phone pm cant check the exact path, but its roughly that. Let me know if you cant find it. :)

changed the cam sensor today which is as you say an easy peasy job except when you break the end of on of the ht leads going into the coil aahhhhhh. A quick trip to eurocar parts sorted that little doozy. Car is running alot smoother and feels more responsive now. Won't know whether its sorted my cold start problem while the morning.
