I am about to buy a *MINT* condition VR6 with FSH and 120k miles on the clock.

It is on its original clutch and original timing chains.

The clutch is neither slipping nor the chains rattling.

It has been regularly serviced by VW.

Should I be worried about this? It is a 1995 (M) for £2100

Listen to the timing chains is my advice, and read our buyers guide - Usually Chains need doing around the 100k mark, and headgaskets. some are ok, any may not need doing for a little while longer, but you can easily inspect the top chain guide for wear...

Pete thanks for the quick feedback.

Realistically, in your experience though, should I be going into this purchase aasuming that the chains+clutch will need doing sooner rather than later?

I was surprised that the clutch had gone so long without a change. If so, is £2100 for a 1995(M) reasonbale?

what sort of cost will the chains+clutch pan out at?

Regards

looks pretty good mate... my only concern would be why he is selling it after 2 months, it could be genuine or it could be hiding something... like chains... this can be a £600-700 job.

However it could be a genuine car and a great buy... just keep your wits about you when viewing it and dont get over excited about polished paintwork, be sure to check for rust patches, or signs of the arches waving etc and have a good listen to the engine noise, and remember chain noise can really only be heard when you have the bonnet open and get someone else to rev the car to 1500 revs, you will soon hear if they are not ok.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. :) :)

Thanks guys, I left a £20 deposit on saturday.

The bodywork is all mint etc... and it seemed to drive well, etc.. I was surprised to learn that it was still on the original clutch, etc.. I hadn't come across a clutch that lasted so long in a performance car. I have become a little concerned about various posts in relation to the timing chain change at 100k miles or so.

If it means I spend a few hundred more and get a vr6 with lower miles, or one where at least the clutch/chain has been done, so be it.

It is down to you whether you have the time or money to take the risk... its might be a solid car and the chains may carry on strong to 150k.... but it may be the case that within a year you will be having to do it... (i did mine at 101k) glad to get it out of the way to be fair... but if you dont really want to have that worry then keep looking, there is plenty out there. Only you can make that call...

Not saying they are neccessarily better but you should try to look at at least 3-5 examples before buying imo.

Also, go for a highline if possible. I regretted that after I bought mine, I then had to buy the leathers etc which bumped the price up that I originally paid.
