clutch or gearbox f***ed *solved*

Recommended Posts

I was due to post some pics of my vr now ive got her back from the shop but have run into a problem. I always knew the clutch was going. its been high since j bought it. i was driving it and got to a roundabout in 3rd, tried to change down to 2nd, then 1st but couldn't. the box went all sloppy and I could only select 3rd. I managed to nurse it 45 miles back home to my local garage only having to stop once. unfortunately it was on a hill and I burnt most of the clutch trying to pull away. at the end of the journey the engine revs were rising but not the speed so im guessing the clutch is now fooked but is that my only problem? am I looking at a big bill?

thanks

this is the culprit. stopped by the garage to check out the car and found the bolt for the gear selector on top of the box along with the bush!!! that would explain why it was stuck in 3rd. i put it back in temporarily and sat in and i can select all gears but started it up and tried moving it and the clutch is pretty much non existent. better its done now i suppose than further down the line when i actually need it every day.

cheers oli for the pointer mate. luckily its not broken just missing a nut.

can anyone confirm the assembly for the selector. ive got the bolt and bush but missing other components. im assuming it can oly be a washer and nut but would like to be sure in case. thanks

final question to all of you is.. flywheel change with clutch?? or is that a 'wont know til your in there' job?

cheers

No bother matey. I should have mentioned this as well as it also happened to me prior to snapping the selector assembly off!

In fact i think it was the temporary solution that foobared the assembly. I put a large washer on the top of the bush then tightened the nut down onto it. Whilst it initially made changing gears fairly stiff it soon wore in. Unfortunately i think it put too much strain on the selector hence snapping it off.

Also VW told me i couldn't buy the bush and nut assembly separate so i had to buy new selector cables.

As Calico said shouldnt need to replace fly wheel.
