Dragon Dave 1
Just wondering??When I got the VR6 the previous owner told me to use high octane, I have always used 99 octane fuel in my GTi and have continued with that.A friend of mine who drives an AMG Mercedes says his car runs better on the 95 octane fuel from the same petrol station. There was a test on Fifth Gear, where they tested the difference between 95 and 98 octane. They tested three cars on a rolling road. The first was a small economic car (can't remember which one) and it didn't make any difference to the power, the second car was a golf GTi (new one) and the high octane fuel gave a few more horsepower and then the third car was a Impreza WRX and the high octane fuel increased the power by 25bhp!When I tried a tank of each in my GTi 8v, there wasn't much difference but the car did feel a little more aggressive with the higher octane. I would say that it gave me a few more horses. The conclusion on Fifth Gear was that an economical car isn't designed to take advantage of the higher octane, whereas a performance engine will take advantage of it.What do you run in you car?Have you tried different fuels?Do you notice the difference?I tried BP 98 and Shell 95 & 99 in my GTi and I have only put Shell 99 in my VR6. hvr6 88
i used to use tesco 99 octane. found it to be better than the othersother half says the same but it's no cheaper than optimax (v power)
RAPgolfvr6182 2
i used to use tesco 99 octane. found it to be better than the othersother half says the same but it's no cheaper than optimax (v power)i did a little test n found that i produced more power on 99 octane than i did on bp ultimate so thats why i went with tesco 99 i made another 4bhp with 99 octane than on bp on the same rolling road a week after i went to it. Just_Paul 0
v-power every fill... don't know how much longer i can keep it up though! tried normal, but just feels a bit more lively and 'playful' with v power!
Dragon Dave 1
v-power every fill... feels a bit more lively and 'playful' with v power! That's what I thought, I tried BP Ultimate (98 Octane), Shell Vpower (99 Octane) and Shell regular (95 octane), I think it goes better with higher octane. Dragon Dave 1
i did a little test n found that i produced more power on 99 octane than i did on bp ultimate so thats why i went with tesco 99 i made another 4bhp with 99 octane than on bp on the same rolling road a week after i went to it.That's the kind of answer I'm looking for. I think 4 bhp is quite a big difference between 99 or 98 octane fuel. You must lose quite a lot of power if you run it on 95 octane.
H13VYY 0
i personally think you cannot notice the difference unless you got a turbo car where it makes a bigger difference. ususally i think its all psychological. on the M3 forum (m3 cutters) most of them use tesco supreme as they believe it was the most effective hen they carried out some test. my borther told me this as he's a member on there and he also uses tesco supreme.
